I love the ritual of sipping on a delicious, flavorful cocktail, but I don't always love how I feel after consuming alcohol. I'm a registered dietitian, and I work with a lot of clients who feel the same way. Many of them want to skip the side effects of alcohol but still enjoy a sophisticated alternative. That's why I'm excited to share one of my favorite recipes: the non-alcoholic negroni.

This delicious mocktail delivers everything you want from the classic Italian aperitif—bitter complexity, botanical depth, and that ritual of a well-crafted drink—without the alcohol.

What makes this recipe stand out is Live it Up Feel the Beet, a beetroot powder blend that adds more than just a gorgeous ruby hue. It brings real nutritional value: antioxidants, adaptogens, and ingredients that support natural energy production, circulation, and mental clarity. Whether you're participating in Dry January, cutting back on alcohol, or simply want a drink that works with your wellness goals, this NA negroni is your answer.

What a Negroni Is and Why This Recipe Works

The classic Negroni is one of Italy's most iconic cocktails, traditionally built with equal parts gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari. The result is a bittersweet, herbaceous drink with citrus notes and a distinctive red-orange color. It's bold, complex, and definitely an acquired taste—but once you love it, nothing else compares.

The beauty of mocktails is that they can capture the similar complexity and ritual that makes cocktails special. A well-made non-alcoholic negroni recipe shouldn't just be "juice in a fancy glass." It should deliver layered flavors, visual appeal, and that moment of pause that comes with savoring something intentionally crafted.

Here's why this NA negroni version works:

  • Flavor: Earthy beetroot meets bitter citrus and botanical notes for a perfectly balanced profile. The combination honors the original while creating something unique.
  • Wellness: You get superfoods and antioxidants that offer a vibrant nutritional profile supporting your overall well-being.
  • Functionality: The beets combined with adaptogens in Feel the Beet support healthy circulation, mental focus, and physical stamina—benefits you won't find in a traditional cocktail.
  • Occasion-friendly: This drink looks elegant and refined enough for dinner parties or special occasions, but it's simple enough to make on a Tuesday evening when you want something nicer than sparkling water.

The Negroni was invented in 1919 in Florence, Italy, when Count Camillo Negroni asked his bartender to strengthen his favorite cocktail, the Americano, by replacing the soda water with gin. The drink gained worldwide fame and remains one of the most ordered cocktails globally.

Feel the Beet Negroni Mocktail Ingredients

I'm offering two methods for this non alcoholic negroni recipe. Method A uses specialty non-alcoholic spirits if you want something closest to the traditional version. Method B uses simple pantry ingredients if you prefer to skip the specialty products.

Both versions make 2 servings and deliver that signature bitter-meets-earthy complexity.

Method A Ingredients

  • 1 ounce non-alcoholic gin or botanical spirit
  • 1 ounce non-alcoholic sweet aperitif or vermouth substitute
  • 1 ounce non-alcoholic bitter aperitif or Campari alternative
  • 2 scoops Live it Up Feel the Beet
  • 3 ounces still water
  • Ice
  • Orange twist or peel for garnish

Method B Ingredients

  • 1 ounce fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 ounce unsweetened pomegranate juice
  • 2–3 dashes orange or aromatic bitters (optional for herbal depth; note that bitters contain trace alcohol)
  • 2 scoops Live it Up Feel the Beet
  • 4 ounces still water
  • Ice
  • Grapefruit twist or peel for garnish

How to Make This Non Alcoholic-Negroni

Method A Instructions

  1. In a glass or cocktail shaker, combine Feel the Beet powder with 3 ounces of still water. Mix thoroughly until completely dissolved, using a spoon or small whisk to ensure no clumps remain.
  2. Add the non-alcoholic gin, sweet aperitif, and bitter aperitif to the shaker along with ice. Stir gently for 15 revolutions until the mixture is well-chilled. Do not shake.
  3. Strain the mixture into a rocks glass over one large ice cube. A single large cube melts more slowly than regular ice, preventing dilution.
  4. Express an orange peel over the top of the drink by holding it over the glass and giving it a firm twist to release the oils. Run the peel around the rim of the glass, then drop it in as garnish.

Method B Instructions

  1. In a glass or cocktail shaker, combine Feel the Beet powder with 4 ounces of still water. Mix thoroughly until the powder is fully incorporated and the liquid is smooth.
  2. Add the grapefruit juice and pomegranate juice to the mixture.
  3. Add 2–3 dashes of orange or aromatic bitters if using. This step is optional but adds herbaceous depth that mimics the complexity of traditional spirits.
  4. Add ice and stir gently for 15 revolutions seconds to chill the mixture.
  5. Strain into a rocks glass over one large ice cube.
  6. Express a grapefruit peel over the top of the drink and use it as garnish.

Functional Benefits from a Dietitian

Let's talk about what makes this NA negroni more than just a tasty alternative. Each ingredient brings something meaningful to your glass.

Beetroot Powder

Feel the Beet contains over 2g of pure beet powder per serving, which is known for its naturally occurring nitrates. This compound helps your body’s nitric oxide production, supporting circulation, energy, and stamina. The superfood blend also delivers antioxidants that help combat oxidative stress and support recovery after physical activity or stressful days.

What sets Feel the Beet apart is the inclusion of a small amount of functional mushrooms and adaptogens like chaga, reishi, cordyceps, and ashwagandha. These ingredients work synergistically to support cognitive function, help your body adapt to stress, and promote normal mental clarity. Reishi and ashwagandha, in particular, have been studied for their potential to support the body's stress response and promote a sense of calm focus, perfect for unwinding after work without the depressant effects of alcohol.

Many athletes consume beet juice to support their athletic performance and recovery. Some studies suggest that the nitrate content in beets helps deliver more oxygen throughout your body, helping with endurance and stamina.

Water & Citrus Juice

Hydration is often overlooked when we're focused on flavor, but it matters. Staying properly hydrated supports every system in your body, from digestion to cognitive function. The citrus juice in Method B provides vitamin C, a water-soluble antioxidant that supports immune health and helps your body absorb plant-based iron from meals. Grapefruit and pomegranate also contain additional phytonutrients and antioxidants that contribute to overall wellness.

Low Sugar and Alcohol-Free

Perhaps the best part of this NA Negroni is that it's a guilt-free beverage. It provides a low-calorie, low-sugar, and alcohol-free option without the hangover, disrupted sleep, or sugar crash that may follow drinking. Alcohol interferes with REM sleep, impairs recovery, and can leave you feeling foggy the next day. By choosing an alcohol-free option, you're supporting sleep quality, hydration, and morning-after clarity. The natural sugars from the fruit juice in Method B are balanced by fiber and nutrients, making them a better choice than refined sweeteners.

Tips for Success

The best part about this non alcoholic negroni recipe is how adaptable it is. Here are my recommendations for getting the most out of it.

Customize Your Mocktail

I encourage you to experiment and make this recipe your own. Here are some variations worth trying:

  • Add seasonal warmth: Drop a cinnamon stick and star anise into your glass before adding the liquid. Let it sit for a minute to infuse subtle spice notes that work beautifully in cooler months.
  • Enhance the berry notes: Muddle a handful of fresh or frozen raspberries in the bottom of your glass before adding the other ingredients. This amplifies the subtle berry flavor in Feel the Beet while adding extra antioxidants and visual appeal.
  • Adjust the bitterness: Everyone's palate is different. If you find the drink too bitter, reduce the bitter aperitif or bitters slightly. If you want more edge, increase them. The goal is a drink you actually enjoy, not one you force yourself to finish.

Research suggests that our taste preferences can shift over time with repeated exposure. If you're new to bitter flavors, your palate may adapt within a few weeks of regularly enjoying bitter foods and drinks. Many people find they start craving that complexity once their taste buds adjust.

Storage Recommendations

This drink is best enjoyed fresh when the flavors are bright and the ice is cold. However, you can prepare the Feel the Beet mixture ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. When you're ready to serve, just add your ice and garnish. If using Method A with specialty spirits, you can batch the entire recipe and keep it chilled, then pour over fresh ice as needed.

Why Try Live it Up Feel the Beet in Your Healthy Recipes

Using Feel the Beet in this NA negroni transforms a simple drink into something that actively supports your health. You're not just substituting alcohol, you're upgrading your beverage with nutrients that matter.

Live it Up Feel the Beet is a versatile blend you can enjoy on its own as a daily pick-me-up or in smoothies, juices, or fancy mocktails. However you decide to drink this superfood powder, you'll benefit from its nutrient-dense formula in a variety of ways:

  • Beetroot juice may support circulation, stamina, and physical performance
  • Adaptogens, including ashwagandha and bacopa, may aid cognitive function and offer stress support
  • Functional mushrooms, such as king trumpet and lion's mane, are rich in B vitamins that may aid energy levels
  • Antioxidant-rich pomegranate seed powder and beetroot juice help protect against oxidative damage

With no added sugar, GMOs, fillers, gluten, dairy, nuts, or artificial sweeteners, Feel the Beet is an all-natural beet blend that you can feel good about (and it tastes delicious)!

Give Feel the Beet a try and fuel your active life!

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this non-alcoholic negroni without specialty spirits?

Yes, Method B is designed specifically for this. It uses grapefruit juice, pomegranate juice, and optional bitters to create bitter and botanical complexity without any specialty bottles. The result is slightly different from Method A but equally delicious and far more accessible if you don't have a stocked bar of non-alcoholic spirits.

What non-alcoholic spirits work best for Method A?

Look for brands like Seedlip, Ritual Zero Proof, Lyre's, or Monday Gin for the botanical component. For the sweet and bitter aperitifs, try Ghia or Lyre's Italian Spritz (though note that pre-made versions won't include Live it Up Feel the Beet’s superfood benefits). Quality matters with non-alcoholic spirits—read reviews and start with smaller bottles to find brands you enjoy.

Is this mocktail actually good for me?

It's genuinely beneficial. The beetroot powder supports energy production, the adaptogens help your body manage stress, and the antioxidants combat cellular damage. You're also avoiding the effects of alcohol on sleep, hydration, liver function, and recovery. This superfood mocktail offers real functional benefits beyond hydration.

Can I use fresh beet juice instead of Feel the Beet powder?

You can, but you'll need a juicer, you'll deal with cleanup and straining, and you won't get the functional mushrooms and adaptogens that make Live it Up Feel the Beet unique. Fresh beet juice also has a more earthy, raw flavor that some people find off-putting in drinks. The powder is smoother, more convenient, and nutritionally superior for this application.
