Primal Greens 2025: A Dietitian’s Honest Review

A reel came across my social feed proclaiming the virtues of Primal Greens, the super greens supplement from Primal Harvest. As a registered dietitian, I knew I wanted to dive in and ordered a bag of this greens powder for myself as I regularly try new health supplements to give accurate and fact-based guidance to my clients.

Below is my honest review of Primal Greens greens powder, rooted in science and my personal experience, to help you determine whether Primal Greens is right for your health needs and goals. Plus, learn why I still prefer my favorite dietary supplement Live it Up Super Greens over Primal Harvest’s Primal Greens.

In this article, I’ll cover:

Bottom Line: Is Primal Greens Worth a Try?

Despite its affordable price point and GMP-certified production facilities, I don't believe Primal Greens' formula and flavor profile make it worth your while. The small probiotic dose, lack of organic ingredients, and unpleasant taste make this super greens supplement fall down my recommendation list compared to powders like Live it Up Super Greens

Live it Up Super Greens vs. Primal Greens

Compared to Primal Greens, Live it Up Super Greens has

✅Organic superfoods

✅5x the CFUs of probiotics

✅2 delicious, stevia-free flavors

✅Always free shipping

What Is Primal Harvest Primal Greens?

Founded in 2018, Primal Harvest produces a range of supplements to fit seamlessly into modern lifestyles. Founders Max and Michael created the company on the belief that health stems from a combination of diet, exercise, sleep, and supplements. Guided by this philosophy, they set out to create high-quality dietary supplements that embrace this holistic model.

From capsules targeting hair growth to probiotic supplements and greens powder, Primal Harvest has a product to help target all areas of wellness. According to their website, all supplements are GMP-certified and third-party tested for quality assurance.

Let's Look at Primal's Pros and Cons

Primal Greens Purported Benefits

According to the manufacturer’s website, the Primal Greens formula may help with energy levels and performance, immune support, and gut health. Below, you’ll find my full investigation into each of these possible benefits.

Benefit #1: Supports Energy Production

Primal Greens is made with “energy-supporting nutrients” to help you feel and perform your best. Unlike AG1, the celebrity-endorsed competitor packed with mega-doses of vitamins and minerals, Primal Greens contains a reasonably high level of each of the listed vitamins and minerals.

The five nutrients listed on the supplements panel have been linked to supported energy levels:

  1. Vitamin B12 (1042% DV)
  2. Vitamin C (122% DV)
  3. Vitamin E (67% DV)
  4. Zinc (68% DV)
  5. Copper (7% DV)

For the average American diet, the inclusion of these vitamins and minerals may aid balanced energy and overall performance. However, it’s important to review any additional supplements you may be taking alongside Primal Greens because the levels of vitamin C and B12 exceed the recommended daily values.

Consuming certain vitamins beyond the daily recommended values doesn't always mean better and may not be right for you. Be sure to review supplement facts and ingredients to help maintain a balanced diet and speak with a healthcare professional about your needs.

Benefit #2: Supports Immune Resilience

Primal Greens provides vitamin C, zinc, and copper, all of which are tied to immunity, but these essential nutrients are mostly from synthetic formulations. That said, the whole foods in the blend, such as carrot, broccoli, orange, and spinach, can serve as a strong source of phytonutrients and antioxidants.

The super greens formula also contains 2.3g of a “nutrient-dense natural herbs and extracts” blend. Containing turmeric, ginger root, cinnamon, and green tea leaves, this proprietary blend may help support immune health. However, with 12 ingredients packed into 2.3 g, the math comes out to approximately 200 mg per ingredient, which may not be enough to deliver the purported benefit.

Benefit #3: Promotes Healthy Gut Function

Featuring 1 billion CFU of probiotics from one strain (Bacillus subtillis DE111®), 2.5 grams of dietary fiber, and 648 mg of a unique digestive complex, Primal Greens may provide support for a healthy gut and normal digestion.

Though it has the building blocks for gut health, it falls a bit short. Here's why:

According to experts, probiotic doses vary widely depending on the strain and quality. Generally, 1 to 10 billion CFUs are recommended, putting Primal Greens at the bottom of the spectrum. However, some are better than none, and you may still reap the benefits of these gut-healthy bacteria.

Probiotic diversity is also missing. While Bacillus subtillis DE111® is a well-studied probiotic strain, emerging research suggests that multiple probiotic strains are positively linked to gut health. Live it Up Super Greens, on the other hand, offers 5 billion CFU of probiotics across 4 strains.

Though the Primal Health greens powder may provide support for a healthy gut, my professional recommendation is that there are stronger green formulas out there to aid digestion with more CFUs of probiotics, more strains, and more fiber.

Primal Greens Ingredients Breakdown

Now that we’ve covered some of Primal Greens’ purported health benefits, let’s dive into four ingredient groups that make up this formula.

Superfood, Antioxidant, and Mushroom Blend (4.9g)

The largest of the four ingredient groups in Primal Greens is the Superfood, Antioxidant, and Mushroom Blend, and it covers a lot.

  • I was excited to see the inclusion of common veggies, such as carrot, kale, green bell pepper, broccoli, and asparagus alongside lesser-known superfoods like alfalfa leaf, wheat grass, and spirulina. I think this ingredient list is an excellent reminder that some of the best ingredients for your health can be the most common!
  • Of note in the Primal Greens ingredient list are coconut juice, celery, cucumber, and cracked cell wall chlorella. These ingredients can be incredibly hydrating, which is one of the best ways to support overall well-being.
  • Primal Greens also features a number of antioxidant-rich fruits, such as blueberry, cranberry, and blackberry.
  • I also want to highlight the inclusion of powerhouse mushrooms like Reishi and Maitake in this blend. These superfoods have been used in natural remedies for centuries for their impact on inflammation and bacteria. They may also help with supporting calmness and cognition.

While I loved all of the ingredients in this blend, none of them are organic, and there are 34 packed inside just 4.9 grams. That makes me wonder whether you’re getting a proper dose of each superfood.

Chlorella is a green alga celebrated for its nutritional properties. Packed with macro and micronutrients, chlorella is an excellent source of vitamins B and D12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Nutrient Dense Natural Herbs and Extracts (2.3g)

Primal Greens offers a unique blend of natural herbs, spices, and other extracts that may help promote overall wellness. This blend includes acacia gum, acerola cherry extract, turmeric, green tea, cinnamon, eleuthero root, ginger, mangosteen, ashwagandha, ginseng, chlorophyllin, and stevia. Here are some standouts:

  • Ginger has been linked to healthy digestion and inflammation, meaning that it may help with bloating and other signs of digestive upset.
  • Similarly, turmeric is an antioxidant-rich ingredient that may possibly help with inflammation, exercise-related muscle soreness, mental well-being, and cell recovery from free radical damage.
  • I want to emphasize the inclusion of green tea leaf since this ingredient contains some caffeine. Generally, I recommend clients use caffeine-free dietary supplements to reduce the risk of digestive upset and sleep disruptions. However, if you’re not sensitive to caffeine, this may not be an issue.

Digestive Complex and Probiotic Blend (648mg)

I was excited to see that the Primal Greens powder contained a complex that specifically addresses digestion. This complex is composed of

  • Apple fiber and inulin: Both are prebiotic dietary fibers that serve as fuel for the beneficial gut bacteria.
  • Four naturally-derived digestive enzymes: Fungal amylase is derived from fungi that help the body break down starch and sugars. Lipase breaks down fat for the intestines to absorb. The other two digestive enzymes (fungal protease and cellulase) serve similar purposes, ultimately working together to ease digestion and help with nutrient absorption.
  • 1 billion CFUs of three probiotics: Though this is on the lowest end compared to other dietary supplements, it still meets the recommended minimum. Still, some experts suggest a more moderate 5 billion CFU to get the potential benefits.

Primal Greens Quality and Testing

Primal Harvest was founded with quality in mind. Their website states that all products are third-party tested for quality and are produced in GMP-certified facilities in the U.S. These assurances help me feel confident in the quality of their product.

Though they also claim to use the highest quality ingredients from across the globe, I was slightly disappointed that none of the ingredients in Primal Greens are organic

I prefer Live it Up Super Greens because, like Primal Greens, they’re GMP-certified, made in the USA, and third-party tested. Super Greens edges out Primal Greens with its use of only organic vegetables.

Primal Greens Cost Analysis

A one-time purchase of Primal Greens costs $51.45 for a 30-serving bag ($1.71 per daily serving). The company also has the option to make a one-time purchase of several bags at once, offering small savings for each added bag:

  • Two 30-serving bags cost $48.35 per bag (6% savings)
  • Three bags cost $45.25 per bag (12% savings)
  • Four bags at $42.20 each (18% savings)

A Primal Greens subscription saves you 20% and provides free shipping on all orders. For one 30-serving bag, you pay $41.16 per month ($1.37 per serving)—slightly more than the price of Live it Up Super Greens! You can choose to have your subscription delivered every 30, 60, or 90 days. Primal Harvest does not offer bulk subscriptions for multi-person households.

Shipping is only free for orders of $75+ or subscriptions, so plan on paying a shipping fee if you opt to make single purchases. Primal Harvest offers a 90-day money-back guarantee on all unopened and unused products. For first purchases, you can return opened products within 90 days.

Dietary supplements are most effective if taken daily. To ensure your super greens supplement becomes a habit, pick one that fits your budget. Choosing a supplement that is too expensive sets you up to drop the habit before it’s even started!

Primal Greens Taste Review

Primal Greens is only available in one original flavor, which the website describes as having a “neutral, earthy aroma with a hint of sweetness.” Without a prominent flavor, though, this powder has some polarizing reviews.

One reviewer commented on how they could "barely get this product down.” Another user said that the flavor is okay and “it looks worse than it tastes.”

Some people don’t seem bothered at all, describing the flavor as “pleasant” and having a “slightly sweet flavor.”

I read multiple reviews reporting that the formula doesn’t fully dissolve in water. A reviewer said, “There is a constant need to mix the solution or it settles.” Others agreed with this statement, describing the texture as “grainy” and “chalky.”

Though every user’s taste experience will be unique, I’d recommend testing Primal Greens first before committing. I tried the product as well, and here’s my personal experience of the Primal Greens taste:

  • I was overwhelmed by the grassy flavor that was followed by a lingering stevia leaf aftertaste.
  • I tried three methods: following the manufacturer’s directions and mixing a scoop into water, blending a scoop into a smoothie, and stirring a scoop into orange juice.
  • The odd flavor profile was prominent no matter how I prepared the super greens powder, though the smoothie method was my preference.

If you’re sensitive to sweetness, I recommend seeking a stevia-free supplement like Live it Up Super Greens. It's sweetened with monk fruit extract and has a pleasant, smooth texture.

Why I Recommend Live it Up Super Greens

I’ve reviewed hundreds of supplement products, Primal Greens included. No matter how many I try, I always come back to Live it Up Super Greens for the product’s exceptional quality, nutrients, and taste. Unlike Primal Greens, Live it Up provides organic ingredients and essential vitamins and minerals derived from whole foods. Live it Up also contains 5 billion CFU of probiotics from multiple strains, 3g of fiber, and digestive enzymes for more robust gut health support.

Live it Up truly won me over with its flavor and texture:

  • Lightly minty and refreshing, the Original flavor has no trace of the grassy flavors that have become characteristic of most super green juices, the Primal Greens powder included.
  • The Wild Berry flavor is tart and slightly sweet.
  • Additionally, the formula dissolves quickly in water and requires no extra shaking.

As a registered dietitian, I recognize that everyone has unique health needs and goals. I recommend speaking with your health practitioner to get personalized guidance on finding the right supplement for you. Otherwise, consider giving Live it Up a try! With its robust, high-quality ingredient list and refreshing flavor, I recommend Super Greens to all of my clients looking to increase their intake of greens and support wellness goals.

Frequently Asked Questions About Primal Greens

If you’re still unsure whether Primal Greens powder is right for you, check out the answers to some of the most frequently asked questions below.

What is the best greens supplement on the market?

Though there are many excellent greens powders on the market, Live it Up Super Greens is the best greens supplement in my book because its formula is rooted in organic ingredients and whole foods and the brand is transparent about its quality measures. I love that you are also getting 3 servings of vegetables, alongside probiotics and digestive enzymes in every scoop.

Plus, Super Greens is affordable and comes in two refreshing flavors. The 30-day money back policy and free shipping make it a smart investment.

Is Primal Harvest made in the USA?

Yes, Primal Harvest manufactures all of their dietary supplements in the USA in current Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) facilities. Though manufactured in the USA, ingredients are globally sourced.

Is Primal Greens better than AG1?

It depends on your health needs, goals, and budget. Created by Athletic Greens, AG1 is great for athletes who need more vitamins and minerals than the average person. With 10 billion CFUs of probiotics, AG1 is an excellent option for targeting gut health. Another consideration is the high price tag of AG1. One serving of AG1 costs $2.64 per serving with a subscription compared to Primal Greens at $1.37 per serving with a subscription.

A big upside of Primal Greens is that it has a good range of superfoods and vegetables that potentially offer moderate amounts of certain vitamins and minerals, making it better suited to the average American lifestyle. However, Primal Greens doesn’t have any organic ingredients. If you want a product that balances price, organic formula, and quality, I recommend Live it Up over Primal Greens and AG1.

How much ashwagandha is in Primal Greens?

It is unclear exactly how much ashwagandha is in Primal Greens. This ingredient is listed as part of the 2.3g of the Nutrient Dense Natural Herbs and Extracts blend. Usually, ashwagandha requires a 500mg dose to be effective, and with 12 other ingredients in that 2.3-gram blend, it’s unlikely (though possible) that you’re getting the right amount. If you’re taking medications or other supplements, then it is best to consult your health practitioner before taking Primal Greens since ashwagandha can have contraindications with other drugs.

Is Primal Greens FDA-approved?

Dietary supplements are not regulated by the FDA prior to sale like medications are. However, Primal Harvest ensures all their products are produced in GMP-certified facilities to ensure products are produced in clean environments. Additionally, Primal Harvest guarantees that all their products undergo third-party testing for quality and safety assurance.
