The Lowdown
- Primal Harvest Primal Greens: Sufficient superfoods but falls short in vitamins and minerals
- AG1: Best for athletes, may be excessive for everyday use
- Live it Up Super Greens: Best for clean, nutrient-dense daily nutrition
As a dietitian, I help people reach their best health through nutrition. I firmly believe that a greens powder can be an excellent addition to the diet, especially since most people aren’t eating the recommended number of vegetables each day. The challenge lies in finding the right green powder for your individual needs.
Recently my clients have asked about three specific green powders: AG1, Primal Greens, and Live it Up Super Greens. While each of these can be great options for specific needs, only one hits all of my core requirements for nutritional quality: Live it Up Super Greens.
In this article I take a deep dive into each of these three top greens powders, examining their ingredients, purported benefits, taste, and price, so that you can find the best greens powder to fit your unique goals.

Primal Greens Overview
Primal Greens, a relatively new green powder, enjoys a growing following of customers. This greens supplement is touted as a delicious greens powder with over 50+ superfoods and probiotics that aims to support energy levels, immune function, and digestion.
It contains many of the ingredients you’ve come to expect in a greens powder, such as wheat grass and blue-green algae, as well as nutrient-dense vegetables. Interestingly, this formula also includes many of the vegetables and fruits you may normally find in an everyday diet, like cauliflower, green bell pepper, broccoli flower, celery, tomato, orange, and strawberry.
I like how the Primal Greens formula contains an adaptogenic mushroom blend, which includes reishi mushroom and turmeric root. However, with over 50 superfoods per 8-gram scoop, the benefits of each ingredient may be diluted, which is something to consider should you be looking for the most effective greens powder.
Additionally, Primal Greens does not contain any organic ingredients. From my perspective, this brings the greens powder down a notch. While organic is a personal choice, choosing a green supplement with mostly or all organic ingredients can help reduce exposure to herbicides, pesticides, and other chemicals.
What Is Primal Harvest?
Primal Harvest was started in 2018 to help provide holistically-focused, high-quality supplements that enhance health without detracting from it. Primal Greens is just one in a wide array of supplements Primal Harvest offers, from multivitamins to individual vitamins, collagen to cleanses.
Pros
- All-natural formula with wide array of superfood ingredients
- 3.5 billion CFU probiotic blend
- Prebiotic fiber and 5 digestive enzymes
- Gluten-free, dairy-free, soy-free
- Vegan
- Made in the USA
- 90-day money-back guarantee
- Third-party tested and GMP-certified
Cons
- No organic ingredients
- Falls just short of an effective dose of probiotics
- Only a few vitamins and minerals listed
- Benefits may be diluted
- Contains sugar and stevia
- Doesn’t disclose if it’s non-GMO
- Only one flavor
Price: Primal Harvest Primal Greens is moderately priced, with a one-time purchase costing $49.95 ($1.66 per serving) and a monthly subscription running at $39.96 ($1.33 per serving). Subscribers also enjoy the perk of free shipping.
Bottom line on Primal Greens: Primal Greens helps add superfoods and some essential nutrients to your daily diet. As long as you’re not looking for an effective dose of probiotics or a greens powder with the highest efficacy, this greens powder is a good addition to your everyday routine to help fill nutrient gaps.
AG1 Overview
Athletic Greens (AG1) is one of the most widely-known powdered greens on the market today. This greens powder purports to be a “daily foundational nutrition supplement” that supports whole-body health, helps improve digestion, and supports sustained energy. With over 75 ingredients, Athletic Greens is one of the most superfood-packed greens powders around.
With 7 billion CFU probiotics, 1 digestive enzyme, and some prebiotic fibers, AG1 does a good job supporting digestion and gut health. While this greens powder contains traditional ingredients such as spirulina, whole-leaf barley grass, and nutrient-dense natural herbs, it also includes a super mushroom blend that includes shiitake mushroom and reishi mushroom.
AG1 contains many added vitamins, minerals, and antioxidant supplements. In fact, AG1’s goal is to be a “drinkable scoop of vitamins, minerals, probiotics, and food-sourced ingredients,” meaning that while it does contain whole, powdered superfoods, almost half of its ingredients are synthetic supplements.
Science shows that many supplements can positively impact our health, yet others have not yet proven to have benefits. These such ingredients include individual antioxidants separated from whole foods. The theory is that antioxidants work in concert with other phytocompounds in whole foods, helping to provide health benefits. When isolated from the whole food, not all antioxidants have shown the same positive outcomes.
Athletic Greens does have a leg-up on Primal Greens in that it contains more organic ingredients: six. Though similar to Primal Greens, AG1’s benefits may also be diluted due to the sheer number of ingredients per 12g scoop.
What Is Athletic Greens?
Athletic Greens has been around for more than a decade, and the company has put all its energy into one product: AG1. With over 50 iterations, Athletic Greens has evolved throughout the years to better match current science as well as meet their customer’s needs.
This greens company places quality high on their radar. Not only do they treat their product with care by putting it through third-party testing, but they’ve tried to analyze their product to show its effectiveness.
Pros
- Intense amount of superfoods
- 7 billion CFU dairy-free probiotic blend
- Prebiotic fiber
- Adaptogens
- Gluten-free, nut-free, and dairy-free
- Vegan and non-GMO
- 90-day money-back guarantee
- Third-party tested and GMP-certified
Cons
- Only a few organic ingredients
- Excessive synthetic vitamins and minerals added
- Potential for diluted superfood amounts
- Not made in the USA
- Contains stevia
- Only one flavor
- Expensive
Price: AG1 is one of the highest-priced greens supplements to date. A single pouch of 30 servings will set you back $99 ($3.30 per serving), while a monthly subscription costs $79 ($2.63 per serving). While there is a 90-day money-back guarantee, customers do not receive free shipping, even subscribers.
Bottom line on AG1: AG1 provides a wide variety of superfoods, extracts, and adaptogens, along with an effective dose of probiotics. It also contains many synthetic vitamins and minerals. This green powder may work best for high-intensity athletes whose nutrient needs are quite high, but these micronutrient amounts for the everyday customer may be a bit excessive.
Live it Up Super Greens Overview
Live it Up Super Greens is also relatively new to the superfood powder scene, but seems to be rocketing in popularity.
Super Greens’ mission is to be the best all-natural greens powder for daily health, with purported health benefits including digestive and immune support, promoting balanced energy levels, filling nutritional gaps, and being rich in antioxidants. With just over 20 superfoods plus digestive enzymes and probiotics within an 8g scoop, Super Greens is able to pack in much higher doses of each ingredient than Primal Greens and AG1. This greens powder is available in two flavors: Original with a hint of mint, and Wild Berry.
As a dietitian, what makes me happy about this green supplement is that it is made with organic vegetables, so there is no exposure to herbicides or pesticides. While Super Greens contains many of the nutrient-rich ingredients that greens powders are known for, such as nutritional grasses, chlorella, and spirulina, it also includes herbs, roots, and leafy greens. However, unlike Primal Greens and AG1, Super Greens does not include any adaptogenic mushroom blend.
Additionally, this greens powder stays true to what a consumer would expect from a greens powder: it is made of only dried, powdered, whole plants (and probiotics) with nothing synthetic or artificial added.
What Is Live it Up?
Formerly Ensō Superfoods, Live it Up was founded in 2021 to help make a healthy lifestyle easier to achieve. This company focuses on plant-based superfood formulas using all-natural, high-quality ingredients. In addition to Super Greens, their product line-up includes Feel the Beet, a heart health and performance powder with adaptogens, and Golden Hour, a formula with ashwagandha that focuses on promoting calmness and relaxation.
Like AG1, Live it Up puts a lot of effort into the safety and quality of their product with third-party testing, using GMP-certified processing facilities, as well as using all organic vegetables.
Pros
- Wide variety of superfoods with better dosing
- All-natural and made with organic vegetables
- 5 billion CFU dairy-free probiotic blend and 3 digestive enzymes
- Gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free
- Vegan and non-GMO
- Made in the USA
- 60-day money-back guarantee
- Third-party tested and GMP-certified
- No stevia
Cons
- No adaptogens
- Only available through their website
Price: One 30-day package of Live it Up Super Greens costs $59.99 ($1.99 per serving), while a monthly subscription saves 33% coming in at $39.99 ($1.33 per serving). Live it Up provides a 30-day money-back guarantee as well as free shipping on all orders.
Bottom line on Live it Up: Live it Up Super Greens contains many naturally derived vitamins and minerals and is a great overall choice for a daily greens powder. While it does not contain adaptogens, it does have a medley of superfoods in an amount that leaves room for adequate dosing.
Potential Health Benefits
What we eat and drink is hugely impactful; nutrition affects both our physical and mental health. Getting enough micronutrients, things like vitamins and minerals, is critical to support almost every vital function within the body.
The right greens powders can help provide nutrients to support your body’s functions. Because each green supplement contains slightly different superfoods and ingredients, each may promote unique health benefits.
Boost Nutrient Intake
Just because a superfood powder has a lot of superfood ingredients doesn’t necessarily mean it contains a lot of nutrients. Some powdered greens contain so many superfoods that each ingredient is diluted, and not contributing a decent amount of nutrition.
Primal Harvest Primal Greens only contains five vitamins and minerals according to their Supplement Facts Panel. Unless the company tests their product for me, we won’t be certain that this greens powder will help contribute to your daily nutrient intake.
AG1 has over 75 ingredients; however, they add extra vitamins and minerals to help ensure their product is nutritionally well-rounded. While the amount of micronutrients added to Athletic Green could be considered excessive mega-doses for some people, it does provide more than 20 vitamins and minerals per the Supplement Facts Panel, which means this greens powder can be used to boost your nutrient intake.
Super Greens powder does not add synthetic vitamins or minerals, but like AG1, this green supplement provides at least 22 naturally derived micronutrients. All of these nutrients come from the plants in the greens formula, indicating the superfoods are not diluted. Since these micronutrients all come from whole foods, it is likely that they are absorbed efficiently and the antioxidants provide ample benefits.
Support Digestive Health
Our digestive health is reliant upon a few things, including ample micronutrients to help maintain our gut lining, antioxidants to help with inflammation, probiotics to support our microbiome, fiber to help keep you regular and feed our good bacteria, and digestive enzymes to help break down and absorb food.
Primal Greens has five digestive enzymes, which is more than AG1 and Super Greens combined, but only contains 3.5 billion CFU probiotics and 2.4 grams of fiber. It is also lacking in micronutrients, so this formula may not support digestive health quite as well.
AG1 is also a good superfood powder for gut support. It contains a bit more probiotics than Super Greens at 7 billion CFU but contains less of both digestive enzymes (only one) and fiber (2 grams). Most of this greens powder’s fiber comes from added organic apple powder and inulin. As mentioned above, Athletic Greens add vitamins and minerals to its formula, so there are plenty to help play a role in digestive wellness.
Live it Up Super Greens hits all these main points with an effective dose of probiotics at 5 billion CFU, 3 digestive enzymes, 3 grams of fiber (which includes prebiotic fiber from several ingredients including burdock root and nopal cactus), and plenty of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants all derived from whole foods. In combination, this strong digestive complex supports gut health.
Aid Immunity
Immune function relies on many factors, including regular exercise, adequate sleep, and plenty of handwashing. Research also shows that not only do both probiotics and antioxidants play a role in immunity, but there are at least 14 different vitamins and minerals that are needed to help maintain immune resilience.
Interestingly, while Primal Greens only discloses five vitamins and minerals, all of them play a role in immunity. It also contains turmeric, which is a root that research has found may be an immunomodulator, as long as it has enough of the active compound curcumin. Overall, with a lower dose of probiotics and micronutrients, this powdered greens supplement may help support your immune system, just in a slightly lesser capacity.
Both AG1 and Live it Up Super Greens do well in terms of supporting the immune system. Both of these greens powders contain many of the micronutrients needed for immune function and both contain an effective dose of probiotics.
Athletic Greens also includes several added antioxidant supplements, such as coenzyme Q10 and cocoa bean polyphenol extract, though more studies are needed to understand if these impact health. Super Greens contains a few additional superfoods that have been linked with a healthy immune system as well, including nopal cactus, nettle leaf, and parsley leaf.
Maintain Energy
Energy metabolism is the storage and release of energy within the body, and these functions are carried out by enzymes. These enzymes cannot work without being bound to certain vitamins and minerals, specifically the B vitamins, iodine, manganese, magnesium, zinc, chromium, and molybdenum.
Other than B12 and zinc, Primal Greens does not divulge if any of these other essential micronutrients are present in their greens supplement. While I’d like to say that Primal Greens would help you maintain energy, there simply is not enough evidence for me to make that statement.
AG1 adds synthetic B complex vitamins to its formula, so all of these are over 100% of your recommended daily intake (with B12 at over 900% and B7 at over 1100%). While it does not reveal iodine or molybdenum amounts, AG1 does contain manganese, chromium, and zinc. For these reasons, Athletic Greens may help promote energy balance.
Super Greens also contains all the micronutrients listed, including iodine and molybdenum, however rather than adding these from synthetic sources, Super Greens’ micronutrients are all naturally derived from the plants used in its formula. Because of this, Super Greens is a great product to help naturally promote energy production.
Formula Breakdown
While it seems that many greens powder dietary supplements tout the same types of health benefits, each supplement has a unique formula, ingredient quality, and manufacturing process that helps bring other advantages. Let’s break down each formula to better understand what you’re getting.
Organic Superfoods
Choosing organic products is a personal decision. Some people decide that exposure to pesticides and other similar chemicals is not in their best interest due to growing health concerns.
Primal Harvest Primal Greens has no organic ingredients at all and does not provide any promises of the greens being pesticide-free or non-GMO.
For AG1, 6 out of its 75+ ingredients are certified organic. Even though only 8% of their ingredients are organic, they claim their product is free from pesticides and herbicides, along with being non-GMO.
Coming out on top for organic is Live it Up Super Greens. This green powder is made with organic vegetables, nothing conventionally grown, so there are no pesticides, herbicides, or other similar chemicals. It is also non-GMO, for those who are trying to avoid plants that have been subjected to biotechnology and genetic modification.
Key Ingredients
Many greens powders include similar ingredients, such as alfalfa leaf powder, wheatgrass leaf, barley grass leaf, spirulina, and chlorella. Let’s take a brief look at other key ingredients each of these formulas provide.
Primal Greens takes a different perspective, with the majority of its superfoods being vegetables found in everyday diets. Banana, carrot, and spinach are within the top six ingredients. With that said, it also contains some intriguing superfoods, such as acerola cherry extract which is rich in vitamin C, as well as mangosteen extract which is rich in nutrients and has anti-inflammatory properties. Primal Greens also contains green tea leaf, camu camu fruit, coconut juice, pomegranate, Korean ginseng root, cinnamon bark, and eleuthero root.
With over 75 ingredients, AG1 touts many unusual superfoods. The only question is whether any are in an effective dose since so many are packed into such a small scoop. AG1 contains grape seed extract which may help improve blood flow and improve collagen levels, as well as slippery elm which may support gut health. Other superfoods in this greens powder include green tea extract, beet powder, pea protein, and alfalfa leaf.
Live it Up Super Greens includes organic nopal cactus, which is rich in antioxidants and helps support immune function, as well as organic burdock root which is rich in prebiotic fibers, may support skin health, and contains many powerful phytonutrient compounds. Other superfoods Super Greens includes are organic moringa leaf, organic ginger root, organic dulse, organic kelp, organic dandelion leaf, and organic horsetail.
Manufacturing Quality and Safety
Live it Up Super Greens, Athletic Greens, and Primal Greens are all driven to produce quality products with high safety standards.
Primal Greens is both third-party tested as well as produced in facilities that are GMP-certified.
AG1 is not made in the USA, but they state their manufacturing facilities follow GMP regulations. For third-party testing, Athletic Greens is NSF certified for sport, which means that they not only test for all of the same things as Super Greens, but also test for substances that are banned for professional athletes.
Super Greens is made in the USA within a GMP-certified facility, meaning they manufacture at high-quality standards set by the Food and Drug Administration. All products undergo third-party testing to ensure there are no heavy metals, allergens, bad bacteria, yeasts, molds, mycotoxins, and pesticides. Super Greens also goes the extra mile and is made with organic vegetables, which also help curb contamination with other chemicals.
Sweeteners
Most greens powder dietary supplements rely on non-caloric sweeteners to help bring a more palatable flavor to their beverage. However, which sweetener is used makes a big difference to our health.
Both Primal Greens and Athletic Greens use stevia to sweeten their products. While stevia extract (such as enzyme-treated stevia extract and steviol glycosides) is Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) by the FDA, there is conflicting research on whether it affects gut health and microbe diversity.
Additionally, stevia leaves an aftertaste that may not be appreciated by some.
Live it Up Super Greens sweetens its greens powder with a bit of monk fruit extract. This natural sweetener has no calories, is categorized as GRAS, and even shows the potential for providing health benefits.
Allergens
More than 20 million people suffer from food allergies in the United States, so it’s important for many people to have clarity on whether a product is allergen-free.
Primal Greens is gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, and soy-free. However, it should be noted that their greens powder is made in a facility that does process some of these allergens, so there may be a risk of cross-contamination.
AG1 is also free of gluten, dairy, peanuts, and eggs. While it does contain soy lecithin, they claim their product is free from soy trypsin inhibitor and other soy proteins.
Live it Up Super Greens is dairy-free, gluten-free, soy-free, and nut-free. It is also produced in a manufacturing facility that does not produce any other foods with allergens in them, so there is no risk of cross-contamination.
Taste Review
Greens powder dietary supplements have come a long way, and while many may still have an unpleasant earthy flavor, others have found ways to help boost their flavor profile to make them more palatable to their customers.
Whether from naturally present ingredients or from small boosts of plant-derived natural flavors, it’s important for a greens powder to taste good, or it simply won’t be used.
Overall Taste Satisfaction
Primal Greens only has one flavor. Since there are quite a few fruits in this green supplement, the flavor comes off as mildly fruity and slightly sweet. It is still earthy like AG1, but it does a slightly better job at masking this grassy flavor. Overall, customers seem to enjoy the taste.
AG1’s flavor is both a bit earthly as well as fruity. With natural pineapple flavor and natural vanilla flavor, many customers seem to enjoy it, though it's easy to find those who don't.
Live it Up Super Greens has two flavors: The original has a hint of mint from the peppermint leaves, while the Wild Berry has a citrus zing with notes of cherry.
Personally, I think Super Greens has the best overall taste. It’s not overpoweringly sweet, the flavors taste natural, and it’s hard to detect the grassy taste that most greens powders have. Customers agree that Super Greens tends to hit the spot when it comes to taste. In fact, I found it interesting that it was fairly difficult to find a lower taste rating.
Texture & Mixture
Primal Greens does well in the texture and mixability department, and customers have voiced their pleasure.
Customer responses to AG1’s texture and mixability seem to be a mixed bag. Some find it mixes in well, while others take note of the grittiness and solutes that don’t dissolve. It could be that some of the supplements added to this greens powder are not finely ground enough and end up sinking to the bottom.
Super Greens also enjoys positive reviews when it comes to texture and mixability.
Cost Comparison
Like taste, price point is often a big factor in whether a customer purchases certain greens powders. Here we’ll look at how much each of these greens powders cost.
Primal Harvest cost per single 30-serving pouch: $49.95 ($1.66 per serving). Primal Harvest offers savings if you purchase more than one bag, even for one-time purchases. For example, two bags (60 servings) purchased once will cost $46.95 each, three bags (90 servings) will cost $43.95 each, and four bags (120 servings) will cost $40.95 each.
AG1 cost per single 30-serving pouch: $99 ($3.30 per serving)
Live it Up Super Greens cost per single 30-serving pouch: $59.99 ($1.99 per serving)
Loyalty Perks
With monthly subscriptions, customers enjoy better savings.
Primal Greens: The monthly subscription cost per bag is $39.96 ($1.33 per serving), which is 20% off.
While Primal Greens offers multiple pouch-per-month subscriptions (1, 2, 3, and 4 pouches per month), there is no additional discount on purchasing more than one.
Interestingly, monthly subscribers can choose whether they get their deliveries every month, every 2 months, or every 3 months.
All Primal Greens subscriptions can be changed, paused (for 1 to 8 weeks at a time), or canceled anytime in their customer portal or by downloading their Primal Harvest app to manage your subscriptions.
AG1:
- Monthly subscription for one person: $79 ($2.63 per serving)
- Monthly subscription for two people or for high-performer athletes: $149 ($2.49 per serving)
- Monthly subscription for three people: $223.50 ($2.49 per serving)
Initial monthly subscription orders also include a free welcome kit containing a canister, shaker, and 5 travel packs. The double and triple subscriptions also include a bottle of vitamin D3+K2.
All AG1 subscriptions can be paused or canceled anytime by entering their customer portal on their website.
Live it Up Super Greens:
- Monthly subscription for one person: $39.99 ($1.33 per serving), which is a 33% savings.
- Monthly subscription for two people: $69.99 ($1.17 per serving), which is a 42% savings.
Unlike AG1 and Primal Greens, Super Greens offers savings when you purchase more than one pouch per month on a subscription basis.
All Super Greens subscriptions can be changed, rescheduled, or skipped anytime by logging into your customer portal and managing your subscription details.
Shipping
Primal Greens: Shipping is free for subscribers or those who buy more than $75 worth of goods in a single purchase.
AG1: All subscribers must pay for shipping, but monthly subscribers who get deliveries every other month can save 50% on their shipping costs.
Live it Up Super Greens offers free shipping to all customers, whether they are single purchases or subscriptions.
Return Policies
Primal Greens has a 90-day money-back guarantee on the first order, and a refund within 90 days for any sealed, unopened, unused products after the first order.
AG1 offers a 90-day money-back guarantee on the first order.
Live it Up Super Greens offers a 30-day money-back guarantee on first-time purchases, and a refund on returned items after inspected and approved.
Why Choose Live it Up Super Greens
Overall, both Live it Up Super Greens and AG1 are strong contenders in the greens supplement space, with Primal Greens a close runner-up. All three have high-quality, safe products, and include a wide variety of superfoods.
What pulls Super Greens ahead is that not only does it contain all naturally derived vitamins and minerals, but it is made with organic vegetables and contains just over 20 superfoods. With this volume, there is a higher likelihood that its superfoods are effectively dosed, compared to Primal Greens, which has more than 50 ingredients, and AG1, which has more than 75.
Additionally, Super Greens not only is moderately priced and provides a substantial discount for subscribers, but it also has a much higher rating for taste and mixability, factors that tend to be make-or-break for greens powders.
While the most important part of a balanced diet is plenty of whole fruits and vegetables, adding in a quality greens dietary supplement, like Live it Up Super Greens, is an excellent way to close nutrient gaps, help you feel your best, and support overall health.
Every person has a different set of goals, motivations, and nutrient needs that ultimately guide their decision for which greens powder will work best for them, but I feel confident recommending Super Greens to my clients since it is such a versatile product.
