One of my favorite things about being a registered dietitian is seeing my clients take ownership of their health and wellness. It’s rewarding to help people embrace a well-rounded diet, a consistent exercise regimen, healthy sleep habits, and a positive work-life balance.
For those trying to fine-tune their daily nutrient intake, greens powders are a simple yet effective way to increase your consumption of nourishing leafy greens. Yet, with so many green blends on the market, often with drastically different formulations, it can be challenging to determine which is best.
To make this easier for my clients, I took a deep dive into three popular greens powders: Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up Super Greens. In this article, I’ll discuss everything I learned, from health claims and key ingredients to cost, taste, and customer reviews, so you can decide whether to add one of these blends to your routine.

Zena Greens Overview
Zena Organic Supergreens, better known as Zena Greens, is a supplement powder made with USDA Organic ingredients. Zena Greens claims to contain over 70 superfoods, including leafy greens, an organic protein blend, adaptogens, functional mushrooms, and antioxidant-rich fruit and vegetable powders.
The greens powder also contains a “Hydration Blend” consisting of broccoli, cabbage, celery, green bell pepper, lemon juice, and coconut water powder. There is also a blend of fiber, prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. However, although seven different strains are mentioned, neither the label nor the website discloses the quantity of probiotics.
What Is Zena Nutrition?
Having launched its current product offerings in 2024, Zena Nutrition is a newcomer in the dietary supplements industry, yet its products have already attained an impressive level of brand recognition. Zena Greens stick packs are now stocked by Walmart and Costco and are promoted by numerous social media influencers.
On the website, Zena Nutrition emphasizes its commitment to quality ingredients and a holistic approach to wellness that combines scientific research and natural remedies. The Organic Supergreens blend is Zena Nutrition’s flagship product, but the company also offers a Liquid Collagen + Biotin drink to support skin, hair, and nail health. Most recently, they introduced “Zena Complete,” a premium greens powder that surpasses the quantity of superfoods, vitamins, and minerals in Zena Greens.
Zena Greens Pros
- All ingredients are certified USDA Organic
- Features adaptogens, functional mushrooms, and hydration-supporting ingredients
- Plant protein provides a complete amino acid profile
- Gluten-free, sugar-free, and non-GMO
- Stick packs are available in Mixed Berry, Mango, and Green Apple
- Reasonably priced, especially with a subscription
Zena Greens Cons
- Relatively new product with few customer reviews
- $5.99 shipping fee for purchases under $35, even recurring orders
- The 30-serving tub is only available in Mixed Berry
- Some customers find the taste excessively sweet
- Unknown quantity of probiotics
- Supplement Facts do not disclose vitamin and mineral content
Price: Zena Greens is available in 30-serving tubs or 30-count single-serving stick packs. When ordered through the Zena Nutrition website, a 30-serving tub is $32.99, while a monthly subscription is $24.99 ($0.83 per serving), and a 30-count stick pack is $0.93 per serving with a monthly subscription.
Bottom line on Zena: This USDA Organic greens powder boasts an impressive list of superfood ingredients, yet the use of proprietary blends and a lack of transparency on the Supplement Facts obscures the potential health and nutritional benefits. Zena Greens is reasonably priced, though you’ll have to pay for shipping on most orders, even with a subscription.
AG1 Overview
If you’ve spent any time researching greens powders, you’ve probably come across AG1, formerly known as Athletic Greens. Digestion support, immunity, muscle recovery, and balanced energy levels are among the many potential benefits associated with AG1.
AG1 is well-known for its extensive list of over 70 ingredients, including many that are considered superfoods. In addition to leafy greens, fruits, and vegetables, you’ll also find adaptogens, super mushrooms, herbal extracts, the digestive enzyme bromelain, prebiotics, and 7.2 billion CFU of probiotics.
While AG1 has devoted fans who appreciate the large amounts of micronutrients like vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, B vitamins, zinc, and selenium, the strong vegetable taste, and high price tag have prevented other users from becoming repeat customers.
What Is Athletic Greens?
Created by Chris Ashenden, AG1 is a green powder that’s been on the market since 2010 and is promoted online by numerous influencers, celebrities, and athletes, including F1 champion Lewis Hamilton and decorated track and field Olympian Allyson Felix. It is currently manufactured in New Zealand. According to Athletic Greens, AG1 has gone through dozens of iterations to update the formula with the latest scientific research.
Because it is largely marketed to athletes, AG1 undergoes extensive third-party testing and quality control efforts. AG1 is NSF Certified for Sport and free of substances banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency and professional sports organizations.
AG1 Pros
- No sugar or artificial sweeteners
- Produced in GMP-certified facilities
- All ingredients are thoroughly tested for purity and safety
- No caffeine, nuts, dairy, gluten, or GMO ingredients
- Contains 7.2 billion CFU of probiotics
- Meets or exceeds the recommended daily intake of several vitamins
AG1 Cons
- Some of the micronutrient content comes from synthetic vitamins and minerals
- The grassy, vegetable-heavy taste can be offputting
- Significantly more expensive than Live it Up and Zena Greens
- Contains stevia, which leaves an aftertaste
- A $9 shipping fee is added to all orders
- Proprietary formula makes it difficult to judge the ingredients’ effectiveness
Price: Even with the 20% subscription discount, AG1 is an expensive product. A 30-serving pouch normally costs $99, though this drops to $79 per month ($2.63 per serving) when delivered monthly. Regardless of whether you subscribe, you’ll pay a $9 shipping fee on every order.
Bottom line on AG1: With dozens of superfood ingredients, a dedicated customer base, and several celebrity partners, AG1 is one of the best-known green powders on the market despite its grassy flavor and hefty price tag.
Live it Up Super Greens Overview
Live it Up Super Greens is a vegan greens powder made with organic vegetables, probiotics, and digestive enzymes. It’s an all-natural supplement designed to support your body’s natural defenses and promote healthy digestion and energy levels.
Super Greens contains over 20 nutrient-dense superfoods, including kale, broccoli, spinach, spirulina, chlorella, wheatgrass, barley grass, morninga, nopal cactus, kelp, dulse, nettle leaf, burdock rock, and more. The vitamins and minerals in Live it Up Super Greens come from its whole-food ingredients, and it’s free from sugar, artificial sweeteners, GMO ingredients, caffeine, soy, dairy, nuts, and gluten. Unlike many green powders that contain stevia, Super Greens uses monk fruit and ingredients like peppermint leaf for a natural-tasting flavor with a hint of sweetness.
What Is Live it Up?
Live it Up was founded by Brazilian entrepreneur Haim Nigri with the goal of making the nutrition and health benefits of superfoods more accessible. The company emphasizes the importance of customer service and reasonable prices with free shipping on all orders and a comprehensive money-back guarantee.
In addition to their popular greens powder, Live it Up’s other all-natural superfood powders include Feel the Beet, an energizing blend featuring beetroot, mushrooms, maca, and pomegranate, and Golden Hour, a relaxing blend made with turmeric, ginger, and ashwagandha.
Super Greens Pros
- Provides essential nutrients like fiber, vitamin K, riboflavin, folate, vitamin B12, iron, iodine, manganese, and chromium
- 5 billion CFU probiotics and three digestive enzymes
- Available in two great-tasting flavors: the slightly minty Original and Wild Berries
- Free shipping on all orders
- Made in the USA in GMP-certified facilities
- No synthetic vitamins and minerals
- No added sugar, artificial sweeteners, dairy, soy, gluten, or caffeine
Super Greens Cons
- Not sold in travel packs
- Only available from Live it Up website
- Does not contain adaptogens
Price: A 30-serving container of Live it Up Super Greens costs $59.99 for a one-time order. Subscribers receive a $20 discount and pay $39.99 ($1.33 per serving) for a recurring order. All orders come with free shipping, regardless of subscription status.
Bottom Line on Live it Up: With a focus on ingredients packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients, and antioxidants, Live it Up Super Greens is a tasty and affordable way to increase your intake of leafy greens and other superfoods and enjoy potential health benefits related to immunity, digestion, bloating, energy, and more.
Potential Health Benefits
While individual results vary, many people who regularly drink greens powder report positive effects. These can range from feeling more energized to handling stress more effectively. Other potential benefits include support for normal immune function and digestive health.
In this section, I’ll discuss the health benefits associated with Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up Super Greens and how their formulas compare with manufacturer claims.
Enhance Nutrient Intake
Although greens powders can’t replace whole fruits and vegetables, they can provide an additional serving of useful nutrients. A high-quality greens supplement gives you access to a wide range of superfoods that would be challenging to source and prepare individually.
For example, Zena Greens has an “Organic Greens, Fruits, Vegetables and Herbs Blend” containing ingredients like spirulina, alfalfa grass, kale, chlorella, seaweed, ginger root, maca root, green tea extract, and sea vegetables and an “Organic Antioxidant Blend” with açai, goji, cranberry, camu camu, and acerola juice powders. The “Organic Super Mushroom Blend” features maitake, cordyceps, reishi, lion’s mane, shiitake, and turkey tail mushrooms.
However, the Zena Greens label doesn’t list the quantity of the ingredients, making it impossible to determine whether they have been included in effective dosages. The only micronutrients on the Supplement Facts are calcium, iron, sodium, and potassium, each providing less than 5% of the recommended daily value.
AG1 has a far more comprehensive Supplement Facts panel, though it still doesn’t mention ingredient quantities. AG1 has around 70 ingredients, divided into blends like “Alkaline, Nutrient-Dense Raw Superfood Complex,” “Nutrient Dense Extracts, Herbs & Antioxidants,” and “Digestive Enzyme & Super Mushroom Complex.” Much like taking a multivitamin, AG1 is a micronutrient powerhouse, exceeding the daily recommendations for zinc, vitamin C, vitamin E, and several B vitamins. However, it is unclear how much of the micronutrient content comes from the ingredients and how much has been added to bulk up the Supplement Facts.
With around 20 superfoods, Live it Up Super Greens has a much shorter ingredient list than AG1 and Zena Greens. Rather than packing in tiny amounts of dozens of superfoods, Super Greens focuses on a carefully selected list of super greens like kale, broccoli, dandelion leaf, moringa, wheatgrass, and chlorella to ensure that users benefit from the nutritional goodness of each one. These greens provide useful amounts of vitamins and minerals like vitamin K, vitamin B12, manganese, and iodine, without the need for extra micronutrients to be added in.
Boost Hydration
Zena Greens features an “Organic Hydration Blend” consisting of powdered broccoli, green cabbage, celery, green bell pepper, lemon juice, and organic coconut water powder. Vegetables like celery and green bell pepper have a high water content and are hydrating in their natural form, though the coconut water powder seems to be the main focus of this blend. It is an excellent source of electrolytes and is popularly used as a pre-workout or post-workout supplement.
Neither AG1 nor Live it Up Super Greens claims to have a hydration blend, nor do they contain coconut water powder. However, they both provide electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and phosphorus which are important for fluid balance, hydration, nerve and muscle function, and nutrient absorption.
A daily greens drink will also benefit your hydration simply because it is a water-based beverage. Drinking enough water is essential for helping your body feel its best, assisting with important functions like blood flow, healthy digestion, joint maintenance, and healthy skin appearance. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends that men drink around 12.5 cups (100 ounces) and women should drink around 9 cups (73 ounces) daily.
Support Immunity
A robust immune system relies on a diet rich in vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients found in produce, lean protein, and whole grains. For individuals who do not eat enough fruits and vegetables, greens powders may provide the additional micronutrients they need to fill nutritional gaps and help support the body’s natural defenses.
Although Zena Greens does not list the vitamins and mineral content (except for tiny amounts of certain minerals), the ingredient list features a variety of dark leafy greens, cereal grasses, organic vegetables, and antioxidant-rich berries that may contribute to a healthy immune system. However, without ingredient quantities and micronutrient content, the usefulness of Zena Greens for immune support is largely a matter of conjecture.
In contrast, AG1 and Live it Up Super Greens list a wide range of vitamins and minerals on their Supplement Facts panel. Both greens powders contain ingredients like kale, broccoli, and spinach which are rich in immune-supporting compounds like vitamin A, vitamin C, zinc, and selenium.
Aid Digestion
Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up Super Greens contain ingredients that may support healthy digestion. Each green powder has a decent amount of dietary fiber, which promotes digestive regularity.
Likewise, all three products contain digestive enzymes that help the gastrointestinal system to break down food and absorb nutrients. Zena Greens contains cellulase, amylase, and protease, while AG1 contains bromelain. The digestive enzyme blend in Live it Up Super Greens also contains bromelain, along with papain and vegetarian pepsin.
The benefits of probiotics are well understood, as they provide good bacteria that support gut health and contribute to a healthy microbiome, a balanced immune response, and support for inflammation and bloating discomfort. However, although all three greens powders contain various strains of probiotics, Zena Greens does not disclose the amount. AG1 contains 7.2 billion CFU of probiotics, while Live it Up Super Greens contains 5 billion CFU.
It’s also worth noting that while Zena Greens and AG1 contain prebiotics such as gum acacia, apple powder, and inulin to support gut flora, Live it Up Super Greens does not have a prebiotic.
Sustain Energy and Focus
Each of these green powders contains ingredients that may contribute to balanced energy levels and mental focus. For example, Zena Greens contains fatigue-fighting “super mushrooms” along with green tea extract, which provides some caffeine, potentially contributing to mental alertness.
AG1 contains reishi and shiitake mushrooms and a wide range of micronutrients essential for energy production, such as B-complex vitamins, vitamin C, magnesium, iron, and zinc.
Although Live it Up Super Greens does not contain functional mushrooms, it features superfoods like broccoli and spinach that provide important vitamins and minerals associated with sustained energy levels and carrying out important cellular functions.
Formula Breakdown
Not all dietary supplements are created equal, and this applies to greens powders, too. When it comes to ingredients, manufacturing quality, sweeteners, and potential allergens, there are significant differences between these products that potential customers should be aware of.
Organic Superfoods
You’ll find some of the world’s best superfoods in these blends, including chlorella, spirulina, moringa, barley grass, alfalfa leaf, seaweed, broccoli, kale, spinach, and wheatgrass. All three greens powders are entirely non-GMO, though Zena Greens deserves a special mention for containing exclusively USDA Organic ingredients. However, AG1 and Live it Up Super Greens are made with organic vegetables.
As previously mentioned, Zena Greens and AG1 have more extensive ingredient lists than Live it Up Super Greens. While Live it Up focuses on leafy greens, grasses, blue-green algae, and other nutritious plants, Zena Greens and AG1 also feature herbal extracts, berries, functional mushrooms, and adaptogenic herbs like ashwagandha. Zena Greens goes even further by including several sources of plant-based protein.
Yet, Zena Greens and AG1 fall short due to their use of proprietary blends and lack of transparency. For example, Zena Greens has the same serving size as Live it Up Super Greens (8 grams) yet more than three times as many ingredients. With so many ingredients in a single serving, it is hard to imagine that the superfoods in Zena Greens have been included in effective quantities.
Manufacturing Quality and Safety
All three brands have high standards for quality and safety, with various certifications to back up their credentials. AG1 and Live it Super Greens are produced in facilities with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) certification. Although the Zena Nutrition website does not mention this, the company states that its products have undergone third-party testing by independent labs. Athletic Greens and Live it Up also utilize third-party testing on their superfood blends.
Zena Greens and Live it Up are manufactured in the United States, while AG1 is made in New Zealand.
Sweeteners
Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up Super Greens are free from added sugars and artificial sweeteners. For sweetness, Zena Greens uses organic stevia extract, while AG1 relies on stevia leaf powder. These no-calorie sweeteners are far sweeter than sugar, so only a tiny amount is required as they can leave a somewhat artificial aftertaste.
Live it Up Super Greens powder does not contain stevia. Instead, the light sweetness in the blend comes from monk fruit extract. Like stevia, monk fruit extract is a no-calorie sweetener recognized as safe by the FDA, but with a more natural taste.
Allergens
Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up are free from major allergens like eggs, dairy, and gluten. Although AG1 does contain soy-derived lecithin, the Supplement Facts emphasize that there are no soy proteins, so AG1 is highly unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. However, if you have a soy allergy, it’s advisable to consult your doctor before beginning supplementation.
Zena Greens and Live it Up do not contain soy in any form, although those with food sensitivities should note that Zena Nutrition’s products are “manufactured in a facility that also processes tree nuts, peanuts, soy, and wheat.”
Taste Review
As a dietitian, I understand the importance of flavor in helping people form healthy habits. If a food or beverage isn’t enjoyable, it probably won’t become part of your routine.
Thankfully, it’s possible for greens powders to be pleasant to drink, even without sugar and additives.
Overall Taste Satisfaction
What do people think of Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up Super Greens? To find out, I read hundreds of customer reviews. I also tried all three greens powders for myself!
Zena Greens
When you buy a 30-serving tub of Zena Greens, your only flavor option is Mixed Berry, though the stick packs are also available in Green Apple and Mango. Most customers find the sweet and fruity taste of Mixed Berry fairly tolerable. Many reviews mention the importance of drinking it with plenty of ice, and I’m very glad I followed this advice. Although I’m not a fan of stevia-sweetened beverages, getting Zena Greens extra cold made it pleasant enough to drink.
Here’s what other Zena Greens users thought of the powder:
AG1
Although AG1 has gone through numerous product updates over the years, one thing that hasn’t quite clicked is the flavor. Although AG1 has longtime users who say they enjoy the taste, many customers struggle to take this greens powder daily.
Personally, I don’t mind tasting the vegetables in greens powders, which is definitely the case with AG1. However, it seems like Athletic Greens attempted to mask the powder’s plant-heavy taste by adding a hefty amount of stevia and pineapple flavoring. The blend was much easier to drink when mixed with orange juice or a fruit smoothie – an opinion echoed in numerous AG1 reviews.
Live it Up Super Greens
Unlike green powders that attempt to disguise the ingredients, Live it Up allows their natural taste to come through, with just a little bit of sweetness from monk fruit extract. The peppermint in Super Greens makes it especially refreshing when mixed with cool water. I’m also excited to try Wild Berries, a relatively new flavor mentioned in numerous Live it Up reviews.
Texture & Mixture
Flavor isn’t the only aspect of drinkability that can make or break a greens powder. Dissolving easily in water and having a smooth texture are also essential.
Zena Greens
Although the instructions say to stir a scoop of Zena Greens into a glass of ice water, I didn’t enjoy the texture when prepared this way. My hand mixer was somewhat effective at breaking up the clumps, though it was still on the gritty side. Quite a few customer reviews suggest mixing the powder into a smoothie to disguise both the taste and the chalkiness.
AG1
Because I didn’t love the taste of AG1, I mixed it with orange juice for better results. I found that this also improved the texture by making it less chalky. Blending it into a smoothie was even better, as this helped with the grittiness and clumps.
Live it Up Super Greens
After using my handheld mixer to improve the texture of Zena Greens and AG1, I was prepared to do the same with Live it Up Super Greens. It was a pleasant surprise when I discovered that the powder mixes smoothly when stirred into a glass of water. I always scoop the powder carefully, as it can be a little messy, but the fine consistency makes it easy to prepare, regardless of whether you mix it with water, juice, or a smoothie.
Cost Comparison
Curious about how Zena Greens, AG1, and Live it Up compare in terms of price? Here’s what you’ll pay for a 30-serving container when ordered through their websites:
- Zena Greens: 30 servings for $32.99, or $24.99 with a subscription ($0.83 per serving)
- AG1: 30 servings for $99, or $79 with a subscription ($2.64 per serving)
- Live it Up: 30 servings for $59.99, or $39.99 with a subscription ($1.33 per serving)
Loyalty Perks
The major loyalty perk of these green powders is the subscribe and save option. These subscription programs give customers a monthly discount ($20 off for AG1 and Live it Up and $6 off for Zena Greens). Subscriptions can be modified, paused, or canceled at any time.
Additionally, AG1 and Live it Up both offer additional discounts for double subscriptions (60 servings a month), while Zena Greens does not.
Shipping
Live it Up offers free U.S. shipping on every purchase, both subscriptions and one-time orders, with no minimum spend required. Live it Up also ships to the United Kingdom for a $14.99 fee.
Unfortunately, free shipping is not an automatic benefit of becoming an AG1 or Zena Greens subscriber. Zena Nutrition charges a $5.99 shipping fee for orders under $35, including subscriptions. Zena Greens currently only ships within the United States.
Customers in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and Australia pay a $9 delivery fee for every AG1 order, regardless of subscriber status. European customers pay for shipping based on location, with the exception of U.K. customers, who don’t pay for shipping.
Return Policies
Each company offers a money-back guarantee, though with slightly different conditions.
Zena Nutrition gives customers 90 days to return unopened products for a full refund (minus the shipping cost). Opened products can also be returned within 90 days for a 50% refund, provided that less than one-fifth of the powder has been used. Damaged or defective products can be exchanged.
Athletic Greens also has a 90-day money-back guarantee, though it only applies to first-time orders. Shipping costs are not refundable.
Live it Up offers a 30-day Return & Exchange policy on first-time orders. Customers who are not satisfied with their initial purchase can request an exchange or a refund for the full price, minus a $9.99 fulfillment fee.
Why Choose Live it Up Super Greens

What is the best alternative to AG1?
Some of the best Athletic Greens alternatives include Live it Up Super Greens, Vibrant Health Green Vibrance, Amazing Grass Green Blend, Live Conscious Beyond Greens, and Bloom Greens & Superfoods. Each of these products is more affordable than AG1 yet offers a wide variety of nutrient-dense superfoods.
Is Live it Up worth it?
At $39.99 for 30 servings (with a subscription), Live it Up Super Greens is an affordable green powder that’s half the price of AG1. Live it Up Super Greens is available in two sugar-free yet surprisingly tasty flavors, Original and Wild Berries.

Many customers enjoy the taste of Zena Greens, which is available in Mixed Berry, Mango, and Green Apple. However, some people find the fruit flavors excessively sweet with a somewhat artificial aftertaste due to the use of stevia.
What’s the best greens powder?
The “best” greens powder depends on your diet, lifestyle, activity level, taste preferences, budget, and wellness goals, though I recommend Live it Up Super Greens most to my clients. Greens powders are not substitutes for a healthy diet, but they can support your daily nutrition, especially when you aren’t eating fruits and vegetables as frequently as you’d like.
The best greens powders are typically made with whole-food ingredients like whole-leaf barley grass and wheat grass juice powder. They may also contain prebiotics, probiotics, digestive enzymes, and adaptogenic herbs.
