6 Dietitian Reasons Live it Up Surpasses Thorne Daily Greens

With many greens powders available, it can be difficult to understand which blends actually deliver on their promises. As a registered dietitian, I have several reasons as to why I lean toward Live it Up over Thorne Daily Greens powder. Here are my top six.

1. Live it Up is affordable

Thorne's pricing can come as a sticker shock. A one-time purchase of 30 servings will cost you $70, which comes to $2.33 per scoop, making it one of the pricier daily greens powders currently available. You can save 10% if you sign up for their subscription, which can be shipped as per your preference—biweekly, monthly, or every two, three, or four months.

A plus point is that you don't need to worry about a minimum quantity to qualify for free shipping. Still, Live it Up stands out as the more pocket-friendly option. You can save up to 33% with our subscription model and all customers get free shipping, all while enjoying great-tasting, nutrient-dense greens.

2. Live it Up is enjoyable to drink

In my experience, people are more inclined to make a greens powder part of their daily routine when it tastes great. Flavor, texture, and dissolvability are all factors that come into play.

Unlike Live it Up, Thorne comes in only one flavor profile that's sweetened with monk fruit concentrate. Most Amazon reviews show the taste is divisive, with the majority finding it difficult to get past the spicy, minty, matcha taste, even after they add it to their daily preferred beverage, like a juice or smoothie.

In contrast, Live it Up Super Greens comes in two distinct flavor profiles: Original, which has a minty freshness, and Wild Berries, which is more fruity. Verified reviews applaud its refreshing taste, consistency, and quick dissolvability.

3. Live it Up better supports digestion

Studies have shown a correlation between having a good gut and an overall healthy mind and body. Therefore, the presence of probiotics and digestive enzymes is something I always seek out when examining new brands. With no probiotics or digestive enzymes in Thorne's Daily Greens Plus formula, I question the superfood blend's ability to support gut health and thereby promote optimal immune function.

Live it Up's greens powder supports a healthy gut through its inclusion of probiotics, dietary fiber, and three digestive enzymes, making it my preferred beverage choice.

Did You Know? Almost 70-80% of your immune system cells live in your gut? So anytime you're evaluating a greens powder for a healthy immune response, look for the presence of probiotics, enzymes, and fiber.

4. Live it Up features comprehensive nutrition

Our bodies require a wide array of vitamins and minerals to perform at their best, and I know that most people turn to a greens powder to meet their daily nutrient intake. While Thorne lists micronutrients like vitamin D, zinc, and biotin, I have my concerns. There are only three, which is far below what we'd expect from a greens supplement.

Yes, the formula does include spirulina, moringa, and kelp, which are known to be good sources of vitamins A, B, E, and K. However, without the percentages listed on the label, I question the formula's true ability to support energy production, cognitive performance, a healthy stress response, and adrenal function.

Live it Up Super Greens provides a more holistic form of mineral and nutrient support. We believe in transparency, which is why we specifically list all 22 vitamins and minerals your body benefits from in each serving.

5. Live it Up features organic ingredients

Thorne Daily Greens Plus does not mention any organic ingredients in its formula. Non-organic foods may carry some health risks because of the regular use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides in traditional farming. The chemical residues of these can often remain on the product even after they are washed.

Live it Up is made with organic vegetables that can provide your body with all-natural vitamins and minerals that prioritize optimal health and wellness.

6. Live it Up is caffeine-free

Everyone has a different threshold for caffeine. For some, even the smallest amount can lead to unpleasant side effects, such as anxiety, difficulty sleeping, irritability, headaches, and rapid heart rate. Others can have four to five cups of coffee without feeling a thing.

That said, Thorne's green nutrition powder contains matcha green tea, which provides around 35 mg of caffeine per serving. If your body is sensitive to caffeine or you are already having two to three cups of coffee daily, you may want to seek an alternative.

Live it Up Super Greens is 100% caffeine-free, while including natural, energy-aiding ingredients like wheatgrass. It's gentler on your overall mind and body.

Thorne vs. Live it Up Potential Health Benefits

Let's analyze whether each brand lives up to its marketed claims and benefits.

Thorne Purported Benefits

As per Thorne's website, their greens mix delivers the following benefits:

  1. Energy. The inclusion of zinc and biotin lays a strong foundation for energy production. However, to truly optimize energy levels, I would have liked to see more diverse micronutrients such as magnesium, folate, and iron.
  2. Immunity. The lack of transparency around key nutrients (like vitamins A, C, D, and K) also makes me question Thorne’s immune support potential. While Thorne doesn't explicitly claim gut health as a benefit, it does claim to support a better immune response. As mentioned earlier, most of your immune function's building blocks live in your gut. Therefore, the lack of prebiotics, probiotics, and digestive enzymes means it’s less likely to aid immune resilience.
  3. Focus and Stress. I was pleased to see that the adaptogens blend features ancient powerhouses like ashwagandha, ginger, and Rhodiola, all known to support the body's stress response, but b. Research suggests that at least 200mg of Rhodiola and 300mg of ashwagandha are required to actually experience benefits.

Live it Up Purported Benefits

Let's take a quick look at Live it Up Super Greens' claimed health advantages.

  1. Digestive Support: Each serving provides 3 grams of dietary fiber (including some prebiotic fibers from whole veggies) and 5 billion CFUs of dairy-free probiotics alongside three digestive enzymes. These ingredients are recognized to help with overall digestion and help you feel your best.
  2. Immune System Health: Live it Up's formula features nutrient powerhouses that support immune function, like spinach, broccoli, and moringa, alongside essential micronutrients like zinc, magnesium, and iron.
  3. Energy Levels. Our blend includes folate and a range of B vitamins like B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and B12, all of which are essential to energy performance. Research indicates that magnesium and iron also play a strong role in the body's energy production and fatigue resistance.

Taste Comparison

Consuming a glass of powder that tastes bland and chalky can seem like a chore. Let's compare what people are saying about the taste of Thorne Daily Greens Plus and Live it Up Super Greens.

Thorne Greens Taste Live it Up Taste
Flavors Original (minty and spiced) Original (minty) and Wild Berries
Sweetener Monk fruit concentrate Monk fruit extract
Texture Doesn't dissolve well

May leaves sediment
Easy to blend

Works with a small blender
Tastes best with... Fruit juice, milk, smoothies, or stevia to mask the spice kick. Water, milk, smoothies, and juice

Some Thorne reviews note that the single original flavor of Daily Greens Plus has a clear ā€œgreenā€ taste that is lightly sweet, minty or spiced, and pleasant.Ā

ā€œI enjoy this greens mix. While it is more expensive than others I know the ingredients are good. Does have a slight ā€œspiceā€ taste to it, especially at the end.ā€

However, the overall taste impression is mixed, with a number of customers having a hard time ā€œgetting pastā€ the flavor despite Thorne Greens’ other great qualities. I found the earthy hit of ginger spice after spearmint off-putting as well.

"I didn’t even know this was mint flavored... but it’s NASTY and I was so glad when it was gone. Definitely will not be purchasing again."

Taste is such an important part of sticking with a healthy diet, which is why I love Live it Up Super Greens. It has two refreshing flavor options: Original, which is slightly pepperminty, and Wild Berries. The greens blend easily without any grittiness, just one scoop with my preferred beverage daily, and I'm good to go!

"I love the taste, it mixes well."
Desiree B.
"I’m also really into the original flavor. It’s almost minty."
Brigitte I.

Live it Up Supergreens

When deciding between the Thorne Daily Greens Plus vs. Live it Up, a lot comes down to personal preference—what are your nutritional needs, taste preferences, and budget concerns?

While I admire Thorne's formulation and use of superfoods like spirulina and mushrooms and potent antioxidants, I don't believe it offers the same well-rounded formula to really make an impact on your gut health, energy levels, immune function, and wellness.

Live it Up, with its all-natural ingredients, comprehensive gut support, winning flavor options, and adequate dosage of vitamins and minerals, is the product I feel genuinely confident recommending to my clients. Live it Up also happens to be the more budget-friendly option.

FAQs About Thorne Greens vs. Live it Up

Do you still have more questions about how the two brands match up? You aren't alone. Below are my answers to some of the most commonly asked questions.

Where can you buy Thorne's Daily Greens Powder?

Thorne's Daily Greens Plus and their range of other supplements can be purchased on their website or through authorized suppliers on sites like Walmart, Target, eBay, Mayo Clinic Store, and Amazon. You may also be able to find Thorne at some physical stores, doctors' clinics, and health stores.

Which is better, Thorne Daily Greens or AG1?

Both are well-known sources of green nutrition, but they are different in their composition, taste, pricing, and purpose. Thorne's greens feature 28 ingredients, while AG1 (formerly Athletic Greens) is made with over 83 ingredients, including probiotics and new vitamins like molybdenum and boron. Both formulas feature synthetic vitamins and minerals (many of which exceed recommended daily values.

A one-time, non-subscription purchase of Thorne comes to $2.33 per serving, while AG1 is $3.30. They both have no added sugars and are vegan and gluten-free. Given the high cost of both powders, I prefer Live it Up Super Greens for its price, taste, and all-natural, balanced formula.

Is drinking daily greens good for you?

Greens powders are made with dehydrated greens, algae, and superfoods in their most absorbable forms. Research shows that daily consumption of a greens drink can provide a wealth of possible benefits—from supporting digestive and cellular health and sleep quality to potentially aiding your body's defenses against oxidative damage and inflammation. However, every greens powder formula is unique, so be sure to do your research about its ingredients and safety standards.
