AG1 vs. Bloom Greens: What’s the Scoop on These Popular Greens?
In this article:
In this article:

As a registered dietitian who advises clients on practical ways to support their overall nutrition, I’ve spent a lot of time looking into the science behind greens powders. Although powdered greens complement a healthy diet, I’m acutely aware of the nutritional differences between various supplements, as well as the exaggerated health claims made by certain manufacturers.

To better understand the differences between popular greens powders, I've decided to take a closer look at AG1 and Bloom Greens, including each product's ingredients, potential health benefits, nutrients, cost, and taste.

🏆 Who’s the winner? After an extensive review of Bloom Greens vs. AG1, I'm calling it a tie. While AG1 beats Bloom for its quality standards and formula, I wouldn't feel comfortable recommending a greens powder that is so expensive and doesn't deliver on taste.

🥇What is the best green supplement? My go-to pick is still Live it Up Super Greens for its tasty, affordable, and nutrient-rich blend. Rather than opting for tiny amounts of dozens of ingredients, Super Greens provides concentrated doses of 20+ organic superfoods selected for their nutrient density and wide-ranging health benefits.

AG1 Athletic Greens Overview

Athletic Greens has manufactured AG1 since 2010. The supplement has gone through dozens of research-based iterations to arrive at the current formula, AG1 Next Gen, which debuted at the beginning of 2025. While Athletic Greens has focused on its flagship greens powder for years, it also recently debuted AGZ, a nighttime sleep aid.

AG1 contains more than 80 ingredients in one serving. The product claims to promote energy production, healthy digestion and bloating relief, immune health, and mood and cognition.

AG1 Pros

  • Dozens of superfoods, including adaptogens and a mushroom blend (shiitake and reishi mushrooms)
  • Features 10 billion CFUs of probiotics, a digestive enzyme, and dietary fiber
  • Vegan, dairy-free, gluten-free, peanut-free, and non-GMO
  • No added sugar or artificial sweeteners
  • Focuses on ingredient purity and safe manufacturing practices

AG1 Cons

  • One of the most expensive greens powders, even with a subscription
  • Only a fraction of ingredients are organic
  • Contains synthetic vitamins and minerals over recommended daily values
  • Long ingredient list may be a concern for some
  • Contains stevia and silica
  • Trace caffeine from matcha leaf powder, cocoa seed extract, and cocoa bean powder
Dietitian Tip: Fat-soluble vitamins—vitamins A, D, E, and K—are stored by the body’s fatty tissues and liver for extended periods of time. It’s important to stick to the daily recommended intake of any fat-soluble vitamin to reduce the risk of accumulation and potential toxicity. Avoid dietary supplements that overdo it on their vitamin and mineral quantities.

Bloom Greens & Superfoods Overview

Bloom Nutrition is the brainchild of Mari Llewellyn, a fitness influencer and podcast host who founded the company in 2019 with her husband, Greg LaVecchia. Llewellyn is well-known for sharing the details of her weight loss journey online, which she says inspired her to create supplements that support whole-body nutrition and a healthy, active lifestyle.

Largely marketed to women, Bloom Nutrition’s products have attracted a large following on social media. In addition to the popular Greens & Superfoods powder, Bloom makes protein and collagen powders, an energy drink, a pre-workout supplement, prebiotic soda, and more.

Greens Formula Analysis

Here are some important formula features of AG1 and Bloom Greens & Superfoods powders.

AG1 Formula

AG1 Next Gen is well known for its extensive list of 83 ingredients (only 7 organic) that includes leafy greens, fiber, mushrooms, extracts, and fruit powders. Let's see how AG1's formula supports its purported health benefits:

  • Overall health. AG1 Next Gen boasts a comprehensive Supplement Facts panel, showcasing over 20 vitamins and minerals. It's worth noting that many are synthetic and way over the daily recommended intake. This may be okay for high-intensity athletes but I would not recommend these amounts for many individuals.
  • Gut health. To support the growth of healthy gut bacteria, AG1 contains the dietary enzyme bromelain, 10 billion CFU of dairy-free probiotics, and prebiotics in the form of inulin, apple powder, and beta-glucans. When taken with a healthy diet, a daily dose of probiotics can help support your gut microbiome by increasing the amount of beneficial bacteria. Digestive enzyme supplementation may help break down certain foods, especially non-absorbable fiber, and may help ease symptoms like gas and bloating.
  • Energy. AG1 contains vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, zinc, iron, and magnesium, which are crucial for metabolism, oxygen transport, DNA synthesis, and other cellular functions. Cocoa bean powder, cocoa seed extract, and matcha leaf powder may also provide extra energy, though there are likely trace amounts of caffeine.
  • Immunity. The formula includes several ingredients to support the immune system, such as ginger, broccoli powder, leafy greens, spirulina, and chlorella, plus a range of nutrients.
  • Cognition and mood. Adaptogens, like ashwagandha and rhodiola, may help the body combat stress, support cognitive function, and assist with physical performance through antioxidants.

The greens powder includes the additive silica, an anti-caking agent, and stevia (Reb A), a sugar substitute.

Bloom Greens Formula

Bloom has more than 30 ingredients (only 7 organic) in its Greens & Superfoods formula, featuring several proprietary blends. Here’s how well they support their health targets:

  • Overall health. Although Bloom Greens boasts a great list of ingredients—like organic flaxseed, beetroot powder, ginger root, kale leaf powder, and more—it’s impossible to determine how many nutrients these ingredients provide. The Supplement Facts discloses hardly any information except the calorie count and amount of dietary fiber, iron, and sodium. Vitamin B12 (synthetically derived) is included in the Watermelon, Peach, and Pineapple flavors.
  • Gut health. Bloom Greens contains numerous digestive enzymes, blue agave inulin, three strains of probiotics, and a gut-friendly fiber blend. Unfortunately, only two of the flavors, Watermelon and Pineapple, list the CFU quantity of probiotics (2.5 billion). This falls within the recommended range of 1 to 10 billion CFUs but is still on the lower end. Many flavors don’t list this CFU count at all.
  • Energy. Greens powders can provide various micronutrients linked to energy production, such as vitamin C, B-complex vitamins, zinc, iron, and magnesium. While some of the superfoods in Bloom Greens likely provide many of these vitamins and minerals, the amounts aren't specified on the label. Bloom does include a potential energy booster in the form of matcha green tea extract, which may contain small amounts of caffeine.
  • Immunity. There are several ingredients that may support immune health, including elderberry fruit extract, acai fruit and goji berry, blue-green algae, cranberry fruit powder, barley grass powder, grape seed extract, and more, but I’m not confident without more vitamin transparency.
  • Mood and stress response. This isn't technically one of Bloom's listed health targets, but I'm including it here because of the formula's adaptogenic blend, including licorice root extract, rhodiola root powder, and ashwagandha root powder. However, some of these ingredients may not be included in effective doses. For example, several studies have suggested that ashwagandha’s stress-relieving and fatigue-fighting properties are most effective in daily doses of 500 to 600 mg. Bloom’s adaptogenic blend is just 100 mg in total.

Unfortunately, Bloom Nutrition uses the filler maltodextrin in most of its flavors and stevia leaf extract (Reb A) as a sweetener.

Dietitian Tip: Just because a formula contains enticing ingredients, doesn’t mean they’ll necessarily be effective. Opt for dietary supplements that provide transparent vitamin and mineral content so you really know what you’re getting.

🏆 Formula Winner: AG1

In terms of AG1 greens vs. Bloom Nutrition, AG1 wins for its larger serving size that may include more effective doses of nutrient-rich ingredients to support its health targets. It also lists the amount of every vitamin and mineral, which can help consumers in their decision-making.

⭐ Want a better greens formula? Live it Up Super Greens offers a wide range of micronutrients to support a varied and balanced diet, providing the equivalent of three cups of veggies in one scoop. This greens powder supports gut health, the immune system, and energy, detailing the exact amounts of all-natural vitamins and minerals. Even better, Super Greens has three times the number of organic ingredients as both of these brands.

Taste Review

Taste is subjective, so it's understandable that people might have wildly different opinions of the same product. However, I did notice some common themes when comparing customer reviews of AG1 and Bloom Greens.

AG1 Taste

AG1 Next Gen is available in four flavor options:

  1. Original: hints of vanilla and pineapple
  2. Tropical flavor: tastes of papaya and passionfruit
  3. Berry: mix of blueberry and strawberry
  4. Citrus: zesty mix of lemon and orange

Across all the flavors, the green ingredients in the powder are prominent, giving each a strong, earthy flavor. I don’t mind tasting my greens, but I found AG1’s zingy stevia aftertaste hard to stomach. It was especially prominent when mixed with water, so I experimented with smoothies and juice to disguise the flavor, which was moderately successful. I also found that the Tropical flavor was overall sweet with an earthy undertone, creating a strange flavor profile, especially paired with the unexpectedly bitter aftertaste.

Unfortunately, AG1 can be quite gritty and chalky when mixed with water, although the consistency improved when blended into a fruit and yogurt smoothie.

“The taste is okay, unlike most “green” drink supplements I have tried in the past. It’s a little gritty but not so much to discourage me from drinking it.”
Kathryn R., AG1 Website
“AG1 might be very good for me, but I am not enjoying the taste. I find I have to force myself to drink it. I’m going to be on the search for something similar that just tastes better.”
Helen B., AG1 Website

Bloom Greens Taste

Bloom Greens is known for its wide range of 10 fruity flavors, from Orange Passionfruit to Pineapple. I ultimately decided to try the Berry, Strawberry Kiwi, and Coconut flavors, as I've seen influencers raving about the taste on social media. They were drinkable, though much sweeter than I expected.

The fruity sweet flavors do a good job of “hiding” the greens in the powder, but I wish Bloom had been more sparing with the amount of stevia. As with AG1, I detected an overly sweet, offputting aftertaste in each flavor, though perhaps slightly less in Strawberry Kiwi.

The texture of Bloom was too grainy and chalky to the point that I had to remix it before every sip. This issue improved when using a handheld frother, but I had to blend it several times to keep it smooth and drinkable.

“If you’re starting off, I would suggest this one. You can tell there’s greens in here but the berry flavor evens it out.”
Miquela, Bloom Nutrition Website Review
“I personally don’t enjoy the pineapple flavor, it is too sweet and leaves a bad aftertaste. I can’t put in the recommended amount which is a full spoon because the drink becomes too gritty textured and it’s just not enjoyable.”
Savannah, Bloom Nutrition Website Review

🏆 Taste Winner: Bloom Greens

Neither brand fully wins out on flavor and texture for me, but taste is subjective. Most customer reviews point to Bloom as the better choice. AG1 tastes very earthy, which some individuals may not like, and the combination of flavors and sweetener is offputting. Bloom Nutrition does a better job of masking the greens taste, but I found the flavors too sweet. Neither dissolved well.

⭐ Want a better taste? Unlike AG1 Next Gen and Bloom Greens, Live it Up Super Greens uses monk fruit extract as a sweetener (stevia-free), which has a milder, pleasant taste. Live it Up’s Original flavor has a light minty taste from peppermint leaf, while the Wild Berries flavor is somewhat similar to Bloom’s Berry flavor but without the overpowering, artificial sweetness. Both blend beautifully with a smoothie, plant-based milk, or simply a glass of water.

Cost Comparison

Here is the full cost breakdown for AG1 and Bloom Greens.

AG1 Cost

  • One-time purchase (30-serving pouch): $99 ($3.30/serving)
  • Subscription (30-serving pouch): $79 ($2.63/serving)
  • Shipping (from website): Free for some U.S.-based subscriptions; $9 for other orders

The company also offers a 90-day money-back guarantee, allowing customers to initiate a refund if they are unsatisfied with their purchase. But this policy only applies to first-time orders.

Bloom Greens Cost

  • One-time purchase (30-serving container): $34.99 ($1.16/serving)
  • Subscription (30-serving container): $31.49 ($1.04/serving)
  • Shipping (from website): Free for U.S.-based subscriptions and orders $50+

While Bloom Nutrition does offer a 15-day return policy, it only applies to unopened and undamaged items. Only U.S. customers may initiate a return, and they must cover the cost of return postage. To try before you buy a full month's supply, I recommend purchasing Bloom's stick packs.

🏆 Cost Winner: Bloom Greens

Even though an AG1 subscription will save you $20 per month, it's still more than double the cost per serving of Bloom’s price.

⭐ Want better value? For an accessibly priced greens powder that also delivers on formula, try Super Greens, at only $1.33/serving. Although Bloom is technically cheaper, it has a smaller serving size, less greens, doesn't list key vitamins and minerals, only includes 7 organic ingredients, and isn't transparent with its probiotic amount. Plus, Live it Up offers free shipping for all customers and a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Quality and Safety

Find out more about AG1's and Bloom's quality and safety standards.

AG1 Quality

Athletic Greens has earned numerous certifications for AG1, which is made in Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP)-certified facilities and is NSF Certified for Sport. As AG1 is partly aimed at athletes, the company ensures that the greens powder is third-party tested for purity and safety, including screening for over 280 banned substances. The formulas have undergone extensive clinical testing as well.

AG1 is free from “dairy, gluten, lactose, egg, peanuts, and animal byproducts.” Users should note that AG1 is not soy-free. And while it does contain some organic ingredients, only 8% are organic.

Bloom Greens Quality

Bloom Nutrition products are made in GMP-certified facilities and are "rigorously tested to meet the highest standards of safety," though the company doesn't state which third party conducts this testing.

Bloom Greens is dairy-free, gluten-free and contains non-GMO ingredients, but it's unclear what other allergens it may or may not have.

Additionally, only 7 ingredients are organic: organic flaxseed, organic barley grass powder, organic spirulina powder, organic wheatgrass powder, organic alfalfa leaf powder, organic chlorella powder, and organic carrot powder.

🏆Quality Winner: AG1

Athletic Greens is extremely transparent with its third-party testing, providing a certificate of analysis and reports of what exactly is tested (e.g., heavy metals, allergens, microbes, etc.). Bloom Nutrition doesn't provide this level of transparency.

⭐ Want more organic ingredients? 20+ superfoods in Super Greens are organic, making it the only product on this list to truly prioritize organic ingredients. Plus, Live it Up's products are third-party tested, free of major allergens, and are GMP-manufactured in the United States from globally sourced, non-GMO ingredients.

FAQs About AG1 vs. Bloom

Still curious about how AG1 and Bloom compare? Check out these commonly asked questions to learn more.

Is Bloom or AG1 better?

Both brands' greens powder formulas, price points, and quality and safety standards are quite different, so deciding between Bloom Greens vs. AG1 depends on your health goals, lifestyle, and any medical concerns. Bloom is better priced with more flavors, while AG1 has rigorous testing and a stronger formula

For the best green powder supplement, try Live it Up Super Greens, which is made with organic superfoods and features over 20 nutrient-rich ingredients. It’s more affordable than AG1, all-natural tastes amazing, and has high quality standards.

What greens are better than AG1?

I recommend Live it Up Super Greens as a more affordable alternative to Athletic Greens AG1. Super Greens offers an effective formula filled with nutrient-rich superfoods and other good-for-you ingredients, many of which are organic. The daily greens powder supports digestion, immunity, and energy in one all-natural, additive-free formula.

Is Bloom Greens actually effective?

Bloom Greens may be effective depending on your health goals and nutritional needs, as it provides more than 30 ingredients, plus probiotics and digestive enzymes for digestive health.

However, some key ingredients may not be included at effective doses, there’s only a small amount of greens, and its Supplement Facts doesn't list the probiotic CFU or all the vitamins and minerals included in the formula. That said, it's an affordable option for a greens supplement (though, Live it Up Super Greens is too, at only $1.33/serving!).

What is the healthiest super greens powder?

While there’s no substitute for a healthy diet, a daily greens powder is an excellent way to increase your intake of fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, and other essential nutrients like probiotics and dietary enzymes. Live it Up Super Greens is a great option for a daily green powder supplement, providing a suite of superfoods that support digestion, energy balance, and immune health.
