Zena Greens Review: Are These Budget Greens Worth the Buzz?

Though this new greens supplement is cost-effective and organic, does it actually have a potent formula? We’ve put Zena to the test.

Zena Greens Review: Are These Budget Greens Worth the Buzz?
In this article:
In this article:

As a registered dietitian, I get a lot of questions from clients looking to better their health. Though I always recommend a well-rounded, balanced diet over any added supplement, I’ve come to love supergreen powders for how they help busy people get their daily servings of vitamin-packed greens and good-for-you ingredients.

Zena Organic Supergreens is a newcomer to the market and one of the few supplements that use USDA-certified organic ingredients. Along with its affordable price and availability at Costco and Amazon, Zena is an enticing pick for many, but I’m not sure the blend is all it’s cracked up to be. Instead, I still recommend Live it Up Super Greens for nutrition transparency and taste.

Below, you’ll find my full, professional review to help you decide if Zena is right for you:

Bottom Line: Is Zena Worth a Try?

Zena is a budget blend with great organic ingredients and flavor choices. But after taking a closer look at the ingredient list, reviews, and overall experience, I am not convinced that Zena Greens is worth the buzz. Compared to Live it Up Super Greens, Zena overstuffs its ingredient list and is unlikely to have effective doses. More importantly, you have no idea about the quantities of vitamins, minerals, and probiotics inside.

What Is Zena Greens?

Zena Nutrition was founded on the belief that everyone should “lead a life filled with vitality and balance.” Guided by this mission, Zena’s various nutritional supplements are designed to support your emotional and psychological well-being in addition to your physical wellness. Zena’s products rely on high-quality ingredients and a unique approach combining science-backed research with natural remedies.

Launched in 2024, Zena Organic Supergreens is a newcomer to the supplement world and aims to “fill the nutritional gap left by a modern lifestyle.” One of the few supplements on the market to boast USDA-certified organic ingredients, Zena contains a unique blend of 70+ leafy greens, fruits, and superfoods.

Did you know? A supplement may list a lot of different ingredients, but if it doesn’t include daily recommended value percentages, it’s unclear whether each serving offers an effective dose and how much the supplement will impact your overall health.

Zena Pros

  • USDA-certified organic
  • Probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and fiber for digestive support
  • Features adaptogens, functional mushrooms, and hydration-supporting ingredients
  • Gluten-free, sugar-free, and non-GMO
  • Stick packs make it easy to take your greens on the go
  • Affordable, especially with a subscription
  • Available at Costco and Walmart

Zena Cons

  • Unclear vitamin and mineral quantities
  • Unknown quantity of probiotics
  • No free shipping
  • Ingredients are likely underdosed
  • Some customers find the taste excessively sweet from stevia

Zena Organic Supergreens Purported Benefits

With 70+ organic superfood ingredients, Zena Organic Supergreens claims to offer a range of purported health benefits. Let’s take a look at some of the company’s biggest claims below.

Zena Organic Supergreens Purported Benefits

Benefit #1: Hydration

I stress to all of my clients the importance of proper hydration; water is essential for joint health, digestion, sleep health, cognition, and mood regulation. By including water-dense ingredients in their hydration blend, Zena targets these aspects of your health and wellness.

Most of Zena’s hydration benefits seem to be provided by coconut water powder and its electrolytes. Combined with a full glass of water, the blend could help you meet your hydration needs. Multiple customer reviewers reported feeling more hydrated, especially more hydrated skin, after adding Zena to their routine.

Benefit #2: Gut Health

A healthy gut starts with what you’re feeding it. Zena Greens includes 3 grams of dietary fiber like inulin, which supports bowel health and weight management. This greens supplement also includes a mix of digestive enzymes:

However, probiotics are an essential component for gut health and healthy digestion, and though Zena mentions some in the ingredient list, they fail to mention any quantity. Without further information, it’s hard for me to recommend Zena Greens for gut health.

Benefit #3: Energy and Fatigue

Dark leafy greens are rich in B vitamins, vitamin C, folate, and other minerals that have been linked to possible decreases in fatigue and sharper mental focus. There’s no shortage of leafy greens in Zena, which also includes chlorella, an algae that may support energy levels, and maca root, a plant linked to energy.

Plus, some reviewers reported feeling more energized since adding Zena Organic Supergreens to their daily regime.

Nonetheless, with 70+ ingredients and only so much room in this blend, it’s likely that these energy-supporting ingredients are underdosed. Instead, users may be feeling a boost due to the inclusion of green tea. Though the exact amount of this caffeine-rich ingredient is not disclosed, I suggest opting for a different supplement if you’re sensitive to caffeine or trying to avoid it for other health reasons.

Benefit #4: Immune Resilience

On the surface, Zena Greens contains a number of vitamin-rich superfoods for immune resilience, such as:

  • Greens like spinach and kale for vitamins C and B
  • Organic bell pepper for vitamin C
  • Seeds for vitamin E and zinc
  • Organic barley grass, spirulina powder, chlorella powder, and ginger root, all of which are rich in antioxidants to help fight inflammation

If you’re lacking fruits and veggies in your regular diet, Zena’s powder may offer immune support, but there are no essential vitamins and minerals listed on the Supplement Facts panel other than iron, calcium, and potassium. Without more transparency, there’s no way to know if you’re making a meaningful impact on your nutrition.

Zena Greens Ingredient Breakdown

One serving of Zena Organic Supergreens contains 20 calories, 4 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of protein, and 3 grams of fiber. Here is a closer look at Zena’s 70+ organic ingredients.

Zena Greens Ingredient Breakdown

Organic Greens, Fruits, Vegetables, and Herbs Blend

Zena Organic Supergreens contains a whopping list of organic greens, fruits, veggies, and herbs in its supplement powder. Though the exact amounts are unknown, some notable ingredients include spirulina, spinach leaf and stalk, wheatgrass, barley grass, alfalfa grass, oat grass, kale, cauliflower, carrot, chlorella, moringa, and parsley.

I also noticed that Zena’s proprietary blend contains ashwagandha, an adaptogenic plant known for its potential to assist with stress and anxiety. The precise amount is not disclosed, making it possibly over- or under-dosed for some people. Though it offers potential mental health benefits, experts recommend consulting with your medical provider or registered dietitian before adding it to your diet if you’re taking other medications.

Organic Hydration Blend

Zena Supergreens targets hydration with a unique blend of water-dense foods, including organic broccoli, organic green cabbage, organic celery stalk, and organic green bell pepper. Most notably, the blend has

  • Organic lemon juice: High in vitamin C, fiber, and essential minerals, which are good for supporting a healthy immune system, helping with digestion, and aiding with nutrient absorption.
  • Organic coconut water: A powerhouse ingredient that’s high in calcium (for bone health) and a natural source of electrolytes, which help hydrate the body.

Organic Berry Antioxidant Blend

Antioxidants help your body heal and fight damage from free radicals, microscopic particles that can harm the body’s cells and tissues. Fortunately, Zena’s organic berry antioxidant blend is packed with natural sources of antioxidants to support your body’s overall health.

These ingredients include powdered pomegranate juice, acai juice, cranberry, camu camu, acerola juice, maqui berry, and more. For example:

  • One teaspoon of camu camu can deliver 750% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin C in addition to its dense amount of antioxidants.
  • Maqui berry is an amazing superfood as well, offering up to three times more antioxidants than blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries.

Organic Super Mushroom Blend

Super mushrooms have been gaining popularity in recent years, and for good reason! Mushrooms are packed with nutrients like vitamin D, magnesium, copper, protein, and fiber. Zena’s organic super mushroom blend contains a blend of 12 super mushrooms, including:

  • Oyster and maitake mushrooms
  • Reishi mushrooms, which have been used in natural medicine practices for hundreds of years. Some studies link this superfood to improved sleep health, mental health, and energy levels.
  • Chaga mushrooms, which have been used for centuries, offering possible anti-inflammatory benefits due to their high amount of antioxidants.

Organic Digestion Blend

Zena’s greens powder contains probiotics, prebiotics, digestive enzymes, and dietary fiber to support digestive health. Since healthy digestion is essential for ensuring your body absorbs the nutrients it needs, I always tell my clients to look for supplements that include both probiotics and digestive enzymes to help break down food and absorb nutrients more effectively.

Though Zena Organic Supergreens contains 2445mg of this digestion blend, the exact quantities of probiotics, prebiotics, and digestive enzymes are not disclosed. Without the exact CFUs, it is difficult to determine whether this dietary supplement offers an effective dose of probiotics.

At the very least, the Supplement Facts show that the product includes 3g of dietary fiber (10% of recommended daily value). Dietary guidelines typically recommend 25 to 30g of fiber per day, so know that Zena’s blend needs to be accompanied by a well-rounded diet.

Did you know? The daily recommended dose of probiotics is one to ten billion CFUs, with a sweet spot between five and ten billion CFUs.

Zena Greens Quality and Safety

Zena Organic Supergreens is one of the few greens supplements on the market that is USDA-certified organic. This means that all ingredients meet the federal guidelines for soil quality, additives, and pest and weed control. In addition to using high-quality ingredients, Zena is produced in the U.S. and third-party tested for quality.

Though Zena is gluten-free, dairy-free, and soy-free, the supergreens powder is manufactured in a facility that also handles wheat, tree nuts, peanuts, and soy. If you’re highly sensitive to these allergens, I recommend opting for another supplement to avoid the risk of cross-contamination.

It’s also important to note that Zena is not nut-free, as it includes coconut water. If you’re concerned about tree nuts, I recommend opting for a blend like Super Greens that is nut-free, processed in an allergen-friendly facility in the U.S., and third-party tested for safety.

Zena Greens Cost Analysis

A one-time purchase of a 30-serving tub of Zena Organic Supergreens is $32.99 ($1.09 per serving). Here are some other price factors worth noting:

  • A monthly subscription for the 30-serving tub saves you 20%, bringing the price to $24.99 ($0.83 per serving).
  • For people on the go, Zena offers convenient, single-serve stick packets of their supergreens blend. A one-time purchase of 30 stick packets costs $39.99 ($1.33 per serving)
  • A monthly subscription of 30-stick packets saves you 20%, bringing the monthly cost to $29.99 ($1.00 per serving).

Zena only ships within the United States. Currently, shipping is free for orders of $35+, with a shipping fee of $5.99 for all orders under $35. This includes monthly subscription orders, none of which meet the minimum for free shipping. I recommend factoring in this shipping cost, especially if you’re considering taking Zena Greens daily.

According to the website, customers can return any unopened and unused items within 90 days for a full refund (minus the cost of shipping). If the item has already been opened and less than a fifth of the product has been used, customers can return the product within 90 days for a 50% refund. If your product arrives damaged or defective, you can exchange it at no additional cost.

Zena Greens Taste Review

Zena Greens comes in three fruity flavors in tubs or stick packs:

  1. Mixed Berry
  2. Mango
  3. Green Apple

These flavors are sweetened with stevia, making it too sweet for some users. Though some reviewers love the taste, others described it as “way too sweet” and needing “TWICE the water” to offset the sweetness.

After digging through reviews on Amazon, the mango and green apple get better feedback than the mixed berry flavor, though a fair number of reviews still mention that the product is too sweet. Out of the three, the green apple flavor was more mild, but still a bit overpowering for my taste.

Zena Supergreens is best mixed with an immersion blender, hand whisk, or frother to get rid of clumps. Additionally, some reviewers described the overall texture as gritty and dense, even when well mixed.

I used my handheld frother to mix the greens powder into a glass of cold water. Initially, this helped, but I soon had some sediment at the bottom of my glass. Though the texture wasn’t exceptionally gritty, I definitely prefer the smoother texture and lighter flavors of Live it Up: refreshing and not too sweet.

Why I Recommend Live it Up Super Greens

Live it Up Super Greens

Zena Organic Supergreens has a lot going for it—a great price point, USDA-organic ingredients, multiple flavors, and a unique hydration blend for overall wellness. However, with the product’s inclusion of stevia, lack of transparency about nutrients, potential exposure to allergens, gritty texture, and concerns about effective doses, I recommend Live it Up Super Greens instead.

As an RDN, I’ve tried countless greens supplements, and Live it Up is one of the only ones that lives up to my standards for quality, taste, and affordability.

  • With organic vegetables, a robust digestive blend, and clear vitamin and mineral content, Live it Up is one of the most reliable sources for comprehensive nutrition. The company does an excellent job of providing detailed information and ensuring that the product is produced in allergen-free facilities.
  • Not to mention the taste! Live it Up’s green juice powder comes in two flavor options that are lightly sweet, refreshing, smooth, and easy to drink.
  • Though Zena Greens costs less than Live it Up, I believe you get what you pay for. With Live it Up, you can rely on our excellent quality and transparent nutrition to help you meet your health goals.

Frequently Asked Questions

There’s a lot to learn about super green supplements, especially newer ones like Zena Organic Supergreens! If you still have questions, I’ve answered some of the most common ones below.

How healthy are Zena Greens?

Zena Greens contains 70+ fruits and vegetables to help you get the necessary vitamins and minerals. Since most Americans consume less than the daily recommendation of 9 servings per day, Zena offers a way to get these ingredients in one scoop. The company uses high-quality USDA-certified organic and non-GMO ingredients but by packing so many into a single serving, Zena is unlikely to provide effective enough doses to see a benefit.

Additionally, the nutrition panel fails to mention any vitamins or minerals inside, so it’s hard to know just how healthy the greens are. Instead, I’d recommend a more concentrated, transparent blend like Live it Up Super Greens

What is the difference between AG1 and Zena Greens?

The celebrity-famous AG1 and newcomer Zena Greens both offer powdered forms of fruits and green vegetables, making it easy to get your daily nutrition in one, dissolvable scoop. Though they’re similar in that they use high-quality fruits and veggies, they’re very different products

AG1 is formulated with athletes in mind so, for most people, the excessive quantities of vitamins and minerals are not needed (and may be dangerous for some). Zena Greens is a newcomer to the market and is one of the few to be USDA-certified organic. At a lower price point, Zena offers 70+ ingredients. Both overstuff their ingredient lists and have been criticized by some customers for off-putting or too-sweet flavors (likely from stevia).

Is Zena Greens FDA-approved?

Zena Greens goes through multiple rounds of third-party testing to meet the USDA requirements for food safety and organic certification. Though the product is processed in a facility that handles wheat, Zena claims that third-party testing confirms the product meets the FDA’s gluten-free standards.

What are Zena Greens good for?

Zena Greens includes organic fruits, veggies, vitamins, and minerals to support all areas of health. Based on the company’s website and ingredient list, Zena Greens may be good for supporting immunity, digestion, gut health, and hydration. Of course, the biggest benefit of Zena Greens is that the formula helps you get your recommended daily serving of fruits and veggies plus a full glass of water with one scoop. Based on the lack of micronutrient and probiotic quantities, however, it’s hard to say how much this super greens powder may benefit you.

What do nutritionists really think about powdered greens?

Since most American adults don’t get enough fruits and veggies, many nutritionists believe greens powders are an excellent way to fill the nutritional gap left in most diets. However, not all greens powders are equal in the eyes of nutritionists. If you want a professionally-recommended powdered greens supplement, look for companies that are vouched for by real registered dietitians (not by celebrities or nutrition influencers). Additionally, it’s important to ensure your supplement is made with quality ingredients, good manufacturing practices, and transparent supplement facts.
