Bloating can be a painful and inconvenient struggle for many of us. And while the root cause of bloating is not fully understood, many health professionals link it with inadequate nutrient intake, diet, and intestinal inflammation.

Greens powders are a healthy and natural option that may aid bloating discomfort. While most of these whole-food vegetable supplements have plenty of leafy greens and superfoods, the best ones for bloating support include probiotics and digestive enzymes, along with plenty of micronutrients.

In this article, I'll be providing my opinion, as a dietitian, on the different greens powders for bloating, what they bring to the table, and whether they might work for you.

"Taking greens powders daily is 100% worth the effort, even if you think you consume enough fruits and veggies on a regular basis. I encourage my clients to think of powdered greens as a nutrient booster to ensure you get the vitamins and minerals your body needs to feel its best!"

1. Live it Up Super Greens

4.9 ★ ★ ★ ★ ★

Price: $1.33 per serving

Recommended by: Lena Bakovic, RDN and Rachel Gargano, RD

Pros Cons
  • Digestive enzymes and probiotics for gut health and digestion
  • Made with organic vegetables, plus nutrient-dense superfoods
  • Non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, sugar-free, and nut-free
  • Third-party tested and GMP-certified manufacturing practices
  • No artificial sweeteners, fillers, or preservatives
  • It tends to sell out fast
  • It has a watery consistency
  • Only sold on their website

Live it Up Super Greens is an all-natural greens powder and one of the best greens powders on the market. It’s also our top pick as the best greens powder for bloating and digestive support thanks to the special attention paid to its probiotic and digestive enzyme blend.

The digestive enzyme complex in Super Greens is derived from papaya, pineapple, and vegetarian pepsin, which are formulated for healthy digestion and bloating discomfort. The complex also contains 5 billion CFUs of probiotics, which aid in developing healthy gut bacteria.

Super Greens is 100% natural, made with organic vegetables, and is produced in the USA, making it a reliable and nutritious greens powder with no pesticides or herbicides that may detract from gut health.

Beyond its potential for bloating, Super Greens’ proprietary super greens complex also contains a wide variety of all-natural ingredients that may also support a healthy immune system, such as organic spirulina powder, organic barley grass powder, organic kale leaf powder, and organic chlorella. The powder is plant-based and free of dairy, sugar, and gluten—an important factor for those with dietary restrictions or food sensitivities that could increase digestive upset.

Despite its abundance of greens, I found that Super Greens was the best-tasting greens powder with two flavors that dissolve easily in water. And, unlike greens powders that use artificial or overpowering sweeteners, Super Greens attains its subtle sweetness naturally from monk fruit.

Bottom Line: For those seeking a healthy, plant-based greens powder filled with probiotics and digestive enzymes to aid bloating discomfort and support digestion, look no further than Super Greens. In addition to bloat-targeting ingredients, Super Greens has a delicious taste users love and the necessary ingredients to help support healthy digestion, with zero additives, fillers, or allergens that may lead to inflammation or digestive upset.

2. Bloom Greens & Superfoods

Blooms-Greens

4.0 ★ ★ ★ ★

Price: $1.04 per serving

Pros Cons
  • Dozens of superfoods
  • Digestive enzyme complex and prebiotic fiber that can provide bloating support
  • Manufactured in the U.S. and third-party tested
  • 8 fun flavors
  • Contains stevia and may contain caffeine from matcha green tea leaf extract
  • Unknown amount of probiotics
  • Nutrition content is relatively low
  • Contains maltodextrin and stevia, which may cause digestive upset

Bloom Greens is a vegan greens powder that is purported to aid digestion, bloating, and immune function. It has over 30 ingredients, including a pre and probiotic blend, fiber blend featuring apple fruit powder and organic flaxseed, and a digestive enzyme blend. Notable ingredients include organic wheatgrass powder, organic barley grass, organic spirulina, organic alfalfa lead, and organic chlorella.

Bloom Greens' digestive enzyme blend contains six major components that may help support bloating discomfort and overall digestive health. Grape seed extract, featured in the Antioxidant Beauty Blend, may also aid gut health.

However, this blend also contains an added ingredient, maltodextrin. This highly processed ingredient is often used as a stabilizing or thickening agent but can cause digestive upset and potentially bloating. In addition to the inclusion of maltodextrin, this greens powder contains stevia. Like with maltodextrin, stevia has been linked to changes in the gut’s healthy bacteria.

A single serving contains only 15 calories, though the scoop size is smaller than most other greens supplements, implicating a smaller effective dose. Nonetheless, taking this greens powder may be a good option for promoting digestive balance, and their array of flavors can help those with more sensitive palates.

Bottom Line: Bloom Greens & Superfoods has quickly become a popular superfood greens powder for inflammation and bloat support despite its smaller portion sizes and use of maltodextrin and stevia. While it is unclear whether the powder has the same level of vitamin and mineral content due to the scarcity of nutritional information on the supplement facts label, some people may enjoy its relatively simple formula and the variety of flavors it provides.

Did You Know? Stevia is a naturally derived, zero-calorie sweetener that’s become popular in the wellness space. Though generally recognized as safe by the FDA, some users report negative stevia side effects on the gut.

3. Amazing Grass Greens Blend

Amazing Grass Greens Blend

3.8 ★ ★ ★ ★

Price: $0.90 per serving

Pros Cons
    • All-natural and mostly organic ingredients
    • Wide variety of superfoods
    • Contains fiber and probiotics that help aid bloating
    • No artificial sweeteners

    • No subscription option
    • Free shipping for orders of $59.99+
    • Contains a food additive
    • Chocolate and Berry flavors contain caffeine
    • No digestive enzymes or prebiotics
    • Small probiotic quantity

Amazing Grass Greens Blend contains gut and digestive health-supporting ingredients such as probiotics and fiber. This budget-friendly greens powder uses plant-based and gluten-free ingredients.

And the majority of its ingredients are organic, so it contains fewer pesticides and herbicides than some of the other brands. One serving has 25-30 calories, 2 grams of dietary fiber, and a few vitamins, but the ingredients differ depending on the flavor.

Though Amazing Grass also makes daily greens powders targeting specific health concerns like digestion, immunity, antioxidants, and energy, their original greens powder is the company’s bread and butter. Unfortunately, this basic formula lacks digestive enzymes needed for the best potential gut support. Additionally, all flavors contain the food additive silica (silicon dioxide), which recent studies indicate may be a trigger for gluten sensitivity in those who are susceptible.

Even so, Amazing Grass Greens' probiotics and added fiber make it a good choice for supporting digestive health and potentially bloating.

Bottom Line: Overall, Amazing Grass Greens Blend is one of the best greens powders on the market due to its carefully curated list of ingredients, many of which are organic. Like Bloom Greens, however, its scarce list of vitamins and minerals and lack of digestive enzymes leaves some room for improvement.

    4. Organifi Green Juice

    Organifi Green Juice

    4.0 ★ ★ ★ ★

    Price: $2.06 per serving

    Pros Cons
      • Certified good manufacturing practices
      • Non-GMO and organic
      • All-natural superfoods
      • Contains adaptogens
      • Transparent ingredient quantities
      • Dairy-free, soy-free, gluten-free, and plant based

        • No probiotics, prebiotics, or digestive enzymes
        • Doesn’t have as many ingredients as other greens powders
        • Contains coconut and caffeine
        • Relatively high price per serving

Organifi Green Juice is an organic greens powder for bloating with an impressive ingredient profile but is a bit pricier than other greens blends on the market. For this higher price point, Organifi Original Mint offers a higher dose of organic Ashwagandha, organic wheat juice powder, and organic coconut water powder. It also contains alkalizing greens such as organic barley grass powder, organic matcha green tea extract, and organic spirulina.

Ashwagandha is an adaptogen that is said to help the body manage stress. Since stress can negatively impact gut health, this herb may aid in digestive health. Likewise, coconut water has been shown to impact gut health by enhancing our gut microbiome

Be aware that Organifi’s second flavor, Crisp Apple, does not have the same ingredient dosing as the Original Mint, which may affect the gut health benefits. While Organifi contains added fiber, it lacks both probiotics and digestive enzymes, so users may need to supplement these separately for their gut health.

Bottom Line: Organifi Green Juice can help contribute to immune and digestive wellness, among other health benefits. However, it is more expensive than other greens powders, contains fewer superfoods, and lacks essential ingredients for gut health like probiotics and digestive enzymes.

        5. Live Conscious Beyond Greens

        Live Conscious Beyond Greens

        4.1 ★ ★ ★ ★

        Price: $1.04 per serving

        Pros Cons
          • Contains probiotics and other nutrients that may help with digestion
          • Includes echinacea and super botanicals
          • All-natural ingredients and third-party tested formula
          • Has a money-back guarantee
          • Subtle matcha flavor is well-reviewed

          • Less than 1 billion CFU of probiotics
          • Contains caffeine from matcha
          • Potential for ineffective dosing from small serving size
          • The single flavor can be grassy and bitter
          • Contains xanthan gum and xylitol, which may cause digestive upset
          • Sweetened with stevia

Those who enjoy matcha may particularly like Beyond Greens, a superfood greens powder with matcha green tea and a mushroom blend. Beyond Greens contains organic and natural ingredients that may support gut health, promote energy, and offer immune support. For example, the blend’s 900mg of echinacea has been shown to support intestinal immunity and the gut microbiome.

However, though it includes probiotics, the quantity included falls well below the recommended 1 billion CFU and only features one strain. Though the 300 million CFU may have some digestive benefits, it is unlikely to offer significant digestive support or bloating relief.

It is also important to point out that this greens powder has one of the smallest scoop sizes on the greens market, creating a potential for ineffective dosing. With that said, because of its small size, Beyond Greens is reasonably priced.

Bottom Line: Live Conscious Beyond Greens is an excellent choice for supporting overall health, and those who enjoy matcha will appreciate the flavor even more. While lacking some superfoods and sufficient probiotics in comparison to other brands, this greens supplement still has a valuable selection of ingredients that may help support bloating.

What Are Greens Powders and What Do They Do?

Powdered greens generally include nutrient-dense, dehydrated vegetables, leafy greens, fruits, herbs, and roots, along with other plant-based ingredients. These powders dissolve in water or other liquids and provide significant nutritional value in a small serving size.

Greens powders are typically rich in:

          • Vitamins A, C, B12, K, and folate
          • Minerals iron, iodine, and manganese
          • Probiotics and digestive enzymes
          • Superfoods like kale leaf powder, spirulina, or barley grass

While powdered greens are not a replacement for eating whole, fresh vegetables, it can help fill nutritional gaps and may promote several health benefits, such as bloating and digestive support. When combined with quality whole foods, consuming greens powders helps make it easier and more convenient to maintain a balanced diet.

With the right balance of ingredients, many greens supplements can help you better reach your daily nutrient needs and may benefit overall health. Depending on their formulas, dosages, and balance of superfoods, different greens can help support:

          • Bloating
          • Energy balance
          • Healthy digestion
          • Immunity
          • And more

How Do Greens Powders Help With Bloating Discomfort?

Because a greens powder is simple to add into your daily routine, it’s an excellent choice for those who could benefit from daily nutritional and digestive support. Here’s why:

          1. Because many contain digestive enzymes, powdered greens are a natural and effective way to help with bloating. These enzymes support the breakdown of complex carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which assists digestion, nutrient absorption, and lowers the likelihood of bloating and discomfort.
          2. Greens powders may also contain fiber and probiotics, which help balance the bacteria in the gut microbiome.
          3. Many green supplements also have a variety of vitamins and minerals that aid digestion.
Dietitian Tip: Hydration is essential for helping to relieve bloating and digestive discomfort since it flushes toxins, salts, and other bloat-inducing elements from your body. Regardless of which superfood greens powder you choose, aim for at least 11.5 to 15.5 cups of water a day.

Potential Benefits of Greens Powders for Bloating Support

Using a greens super powder to supplement your daily nutrition can not only help you sustain a more balanced eating pattern and nutrient intake, but it may also help support your digestion and bloating.

          May Naturally Aid Bloating

A superfood greens powder with digestive enzymes may help with bloating naturally. These enzymes work in the gut to break down food and make it easier to digest and absorb nutrients. Papain, bromelain, and vegetarian pepsin are common digestive enzymes in greens powders. For some people, this approach helps go after the root cause of bloating rather than just addressing individual symptoms for temporary relief.

          Promotes a Healthy Gut Microbiome

Greens powders can help deliver essential probiotics on a daily basis, which are proven to aid gut health and digestion. Probiotics help maintain a healthy balance of beneficial bacteria and may support common digestive issues such as acid reflux, constipation, and bloating. Lactobacillus acidophilus, Bifidobacterium lactis, and Lactobacillus plantarum are typical probiotic strains found in greens powders.

Additionally, fiber is an important nutrient to look for in a greens powder. This type of indigestible carbohydrate acts as food for our gut bacteria, helping to support a healthy gut microbiome.

What Ingredients in Green Powders Support Gut Health?

While most greens powders contain a wide range of ingredients, certain daily greens may have more gut health benefits than others. As mentioned previously, digestive enzymes and probiotics are two of the most important. Here are others that may impact your gut health:

          • Prebiotics & Fiber: These non-digestible fibers are important for gut health. Prebiotics are known to nourish the bacteria in the gut to help keep our microbiome thriving. They stimulate and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria, which may not only support digestion but also immune function. Fiber impacts inflammation, encourages the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut, and helps regulate bowel movements.
          • Chlorella: This freshwater alga has many health benefits. It’s rich in dietary fiber, minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, and proteins that support healthy digestive and immune systems. It’s important to note, however, that some types of chlorella are far more bioavailable than others. Always look for cracked or broken cell wall chlorella in your greens powder.
          • Burdock Root: This natural diuretic contains inulin, which is known for its digestive support and antioxidant properties.
          • Spirulina: Spirulina is a popular blue-green algae packed with phytonutrients and micronutrients, including phycocyanin, chlorophyll, magnesium, iron, and copper. These nutrients naturally support the digestive process and many other health benefits.
          • Kale: Like spirulina, this superfood ranks among the most nutrient-dense foods. Kale contains fiber, antioxidants, and micronutrients that promote bowel regularity and digestive health, as well as skin, hair, and eye health.
          • Alfalfa Leaf: This nutritious herb from the legume family contains numerous vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients, such as calcium, potassium, phosphorus, iron, vitamin C, and vitamin E. It has the potential to support your digestive health via powerful antioxidants.
          • Peppermint Leaf: This herb offers support for bloating and other digestive issues, such as indigestion and gas. Besides the refreshing flavor, peppermint may assist the bile flow in your digestive system and calm the stomach muscles.
          • Other Superfoods: Foods high in nutrients, such as ginger, broccoli, barley grass, and others, may support gut wellness. For instance, ginger's anti-inflammatory properties make it potentially helpful in easing nausea and settling an upset stomach.

How to Choose the Best Greens Powder for Bloating Support

With so many brands on the market, choosing the best greens powder can be confusing. In my experience, it helps to focus on these critical factors when comparing different products:

          • Quality and safety
          • Specific gut-benefiting ingredients
          • Balanced nutrients
          • Taste
          • No additives or fillers
          • Transparent labeling and sourcing
          • Sugar-free with no artificial sweeteners

          Nutrients

Each brand uses a unique formula for its greens powder, so each will offer different nutrients. When deciding on the best greens powder for bloating support, be sure the product is comprehensive for overall health as well. Look for options that have ample vitamins and minerals in addition to the specific ingredients for your individual health goals.

For instance, one scoop of Live it Up’s daily greens contains a blend of superfoods that help revitalize your body with folic acid, iron, vitamins A, B, E, and K, antioxidants, amino acids, fiber, and minerals iodine, iron, manganese, and chromium. While this powder may aid bloating, it also provides nutrients needed for overall wellness.

          Additives

Many greens powders contain unnecessary additives, fillers, and ingredients that may cause gut issues. For example, some products contain xanthan gum, silica, or maltodextrin, all of which may cause digestive upset or bloating in some people. All ingredients in Live it Up’s green powder are natural and there are no additives like fillers, artificial sweeteners, artificial flavors, added sugar, preservatives, and colors.

          Clean Ingredients

Checking the product label for ingredients is vital when buying your super greens powder. Look for products with nutritious leafy greens and vegetables along with herbs and roots. Not all greens powders contain organic ingredients, most include just a few. Choosing an organic greens powder will help avoid inclusion of pesticides and herbicides.

Live it Up Super Greens is made with organic vegetables, so you don’t have to worry about pesticides and herbicides. It’s also allergen-friendly and suitable for many types of diets, including vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, and dairy-free diets.

          Fiber Quantity

While the right mix of anti-inflammatory foods and fiber may help with digestive health, many green supplements don’t contain any fiber at all. Be sure to check the label to understand what your product is providing. Some daily greens include added fiber, such as inulin, but only have 1 to 2 grams of fiber per serving. Live it Up Super Greens does not have added fiber, but does have 3 grams of fiber naturally present from a wide range of plant ingredients.

          Manufacturing and Labeling

When choosing the best greens powder for bloating, it's best to go for a product made in the USA under strict manufacturing guidelines and has been third-party tested for quality. Some countries don't enforce stringent guidelines like the U.S., so some overseas products may have undisclosed contaminants. Live it Up products are USA-made in a GMP-certified facility with third-party testing, so you can be confident that the label matches the content.

          Taste

Even the best greens powder in the world is useless if you can't bring yourself to use it. Depending on your preferences, consider opting for a naturally sweetened powder, such as one that uses monk fruit. This will balance out the traditional earthy flavor of a typical greens powder to help you take your daily greens consistently. Your reaction to a greens flavor is individual, so you may need to try a few different ways of consuming it and a couple different brands before you find the right one for you.

          Frequently Asked Questions About Bloating

To learn more, I’ve put together some of the most asked questions about greens powders for bloating support.

What do I drink for bloating and gas?

Prioritize drinking beverages fortified with probiotics, digestive enzymes, or prebiotics. These ingredients can possibly reduce uncomfortable bloating and gas. Some popular drinks that may help ease bloating include kombucha, green soda, probiotic sodas, or kefir. Regardless, water or herbal teas like chamomile or peppermint, also provide the essential hydration to keep your digestive tract happy and the uncomfortable symptoms at bay.

          Does Bloom help with bloating?

Bloom Greens and Superfoods may help with bloating thanks to its prebiotic fiber, probiotics, and digestive enzyme blends. However, it is unclear whether this greens powder contains effective amounts of probiotics, as the nutrition label does not disclose the exact CFU. Additionally, the formula includes nutrient-rich foods that may combat bloat like berries, carrots, spinach, and ginger root.

What is the best greens powder for bloating?

The best greens powder for bloating contains probiotics, digestive enzymes, fiber, and a variety of organic greens that promote digestive wellness. Different fibers and prebiotics that may help with digestive health include organic acacia fiber, inulin, and fructooligosaccharides, though you can also get prebiotic fiber naturally through superfoods like broccoli and burdock root.

Brands that provide excellent fiber and prebiotics include Live it Up Super Greens, Transparent Labs Prebiotic Greens, Amazing Grass Green Superfood Greens Powder, Nested Naturals Super Greens, and Athletic Greens AG1.

Can greens powder make you feel bloated?

The best greens powder for bloating will contain probiotics, digestive enzymes, and some fiber with zero sugar or fillers. A great greens powder will also include ample vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. It should be noted that a few ingredients used in various greens powders may cause bloating for certain individuals. For example, some greens powders include added fibers like inulin, chicory root, and green banana flour, which are high in carbohydrates that some people have difficulty breaking down.

Do greens powders keep you regular?

Digestive enzymes, probiotics, fiber, and other nutrient-dense ingredients in green supplements all help with bowel regularity by promoting the breakdown of food and supporting your gut microbiome. It’s important to know that your bowel function also relies on the total water and fiber intake from your diet. Along with an appropriate greens powder, focus on these components as part of your healthy diet.

Which is better, AG1 or Live it Up?

Athletic Greens and Live it Up Super Greens are nutrient-dense greens powders that follow excellent safety and quality standards. One of the biggest differences is that Super Greens contains no synthetic vitamins and minerals, while AG1 adds several lab-made micronutrients. Additionally, Super Greens powder is made of organic vegetables while AG1 contains only a handful of organic ingredients.

          What is a superfood?

A superfood is a nutrient-rich food that can benefit overall health and well-being. These foods are often high in antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that can support the immune system, energy levels, and digestive health. Examples of superfoods include organic barley grass, organic spirulina powder, organic chlorella, organic wheatgrass powder, and a super mushroom complex.

How much do greens powders cost?

For many people, greens supplements are worth the money. Typically, a good greens powder costs between $1 and $3.50 per serving, and many greens powders offer added perks such as subscription discounts or free shipping. For example, Live it Up Super Greens comes in at $1.33 per serving for a subscription, while Vibrant Health Green Vibrance costs $1.40 and AG1 costs $2.64 per serving.

Remember that expensive doesn't always equate to quality when it comes to greens supplements, so compare the price of a product to the factors outlined above.

How should I implement green powders into my routine?

I frequently encourage my clients to add green powders into their daily routine to get more fruits and vegetables into their eating patterns. The most common way people enjoy greens is by adding them to a glass of water, milk of choice, orange juice, or your favorite fruit smoothie. Personally, I simply mix a scoop of Live it Up Super Greens into 12 oz of water, along with a few ice cubes to make it extra refreshing.

While I prefer drinking my greens first thing in the morning, a greens drink can be taken anytime you remember. You can drink super greens powders on your way to work, before working out, during your lunch break, or after dinner. Consistency is the key. For those with stomach problems, drinking greens powders after a meal may provide the body with the nutrients to help better digest food.

          Are greens powders worth it?

Yes, I believe superfood supplements are a worthwhile addition to your routine. Even as a dietitian, finding the time to buy and prepare fresh foods was too expensive or time consuming. For me, and many of my clients, daily greens supplements are a quick, efficient way to boost my nutrient intake and support my overall health.

A good greens powder with the right ingredients and ample vitamins and minerals could potentially replace several dietary supplements, such as probiotics, a multivitamin, and even digestive enzymes.

Additionally, there are so many different flavors of greens powders available these days! I personally prefer something less sweet which is why Live it Up is my go-to. But I have also tried other powders to find that grassy, unpleasant green supplements are no longer the norm!

What are some green powder recipes?

Green powders can be used in more than just smoothies and juices. Here are a few unique ways to incorporate your greens into other dishes:

          • Add a scoop of Live it Up greens powder to pancake batter
          • Add a scoop of your green powder to a fruit and protein powder smoothie
          • Mix the greens powder into your oatmeal and top with fresh fruit
          • Add the greens powder into yogurt and top with chopped nuts
          • Mix it in your mousse to create a hip dessert topping
